In Latvia, a highly subtype of highly pathogenic avian H5N1 flu has been laboratory confirmed for six dead swans, which has been prevalent in cases of diseases in wild birds and poultry in European countries since last October, informed in October, informed in October.

This year is the first time that highly pathogenic avian influenza has been registered in Latvia.

The service explains that the dead swans were found on the bank of the Daugava - three were found within the city of Riga, but three more in the territory of Salaspils region. The FVS notes that there were only a few meters between the actual dead animals.

It has already been reported that highly pathogenic avian influenza was detected in Latvia last year only in wild waterfowl - out of the 147 dead wild bird samples examined, 50 were positive.

Despite the fact that the latest positive case of highly pathogenic Avian Influenza in wild birds in Latvia was detected in the summer go and most of the restrictions imposed on poultry keepers were lifted, the FVS urges poultry keepers to be careful to comply with other biosecurity regulations that still apply....

EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS
Six dead wild birds (mute swans, Cygnus olor) were found on the coast of Daugava river in the Salaspils county and Riga City. Sampling of mute swans have been performed in the framework of enhanced passive surveillance program. Samples were submitted to the National Reference Laboratory of Latvia for laboratory testing to HPAI, and on 17th of January HPAI (H5N1) was confirmed in all six mute swans by RT-PCR.
