Garcia-Sastre and Schmolke don't tell us the distance from the index,
but it's presumably similar to H7N9 in the inner segments.
These viruses are pretty much adapted to chickens and distant
from the index, they are usually not found in wild birds, mainly
mallards, that is, where flu is waterborne.
They are seen in Chinese domestic ducks, who have both : chicken and mallard viruses.
But it's not so clear how much the domestic ducks get it from poultry.

While 1997 H5N1 was also very chickish, when H5 reappeared in 2000, it had got its inner
genes from H9N2,H6N1,... and it was much closer to the index,
much less adapted to chickens. Meanwhile East China H9N2 is more chickish.
