Lakeshore Hospital battles virus outbreak

Montreal's Lakeshore General Hospital quarantined several patients and shut down a ward to contain what officials believe could be an outbreak of the Norwalk virus.
At least 26 patients have fallen ill after contracting a contagious virus that triggered violent vomiting and diarrhea.
Infected patients were isolated on Sunday, when the hospital shut down the Three North wing to outsiders, said Ramona Rodriguez, manager of infection control.
"We closed the North because we have a large number of cases there ? so we don't want it to go further. So we don't admit new patients on that unit anymore, and no visitors are allowed on that building either."
While doctors run tests on the patients to confirm the virus, the hospital is stepping up efforts to keep the ward clean, Rodriguez added.
"We've increased the frequency of cleaning the bathrooms, the environment, [and with] the isolation, we've become much more restricted in limiting visitors completely."

The Norwalk virus is one scenario doctors are contemplating, but the outbreak could also be caused by C. difficile, which presents similar symptoms, Rodriguez said.
"Based on how fast it's going through a unit, it's more likely to be a viral type of a gastroenteritis."
At least eight other Quebec hospitals are dealing with gastroenteritis outbreaks.
The Lakeshore General Hospital should have test results by the end of the week.

no visitors allowed on that building? the whole building? wonder if it's a misquote/print and he meant not just that particualr floor?

Re: Lakeshore Hospital battles virus outbreak

could this have any relation to the rumor of the 9 year od that was supposed to have been isolated in Rimouski?

Re: Lakeshore Hospital battles virus outbreak

Do you want to laught ?

In Quebec's slang when you say "J'ai le flux" ( sound "G le flu" ),
It mean "I had diarrea"... :)
Iy's true.

That's odd.

Here we get noro-sick folks off the cruise ships. The first rule is COMPLETE ISOLATION. The second rule is the ultimate environmental hygiene. They're usually fine in about 3 days. The occasional severe dehydration case puts some in the hospital. There have been 2 deaths that I'm aware of. They were frail elderly.

Re: Lakeshore Hospital battles virus outbreak

AlaskaDenise,I should have explained further...after a week without improvement the Dr. ordered a stool test which showed nothing. In the 3rd week he was admitted to hospital where the Doctors were puzzled but no more stool testing was done because :( the lab.workers were on strike and rejected the sample as it was not deemed to be a life or death issue. In the end the Doctors decided that his problems were due to a change in immunosuppressant medication and, since adjusting the dose, his health improved. So,no Norwalk virus after all .My point in the previous post was to say that the doctor THOUGHT it was probably Norwalk, as it is apparently not uncommon right now, and did not suggest isolation.Sorry to confuse.

Quebec hospital expands quarantine

Last Updated: Thursday, December 7, 2006 | 6:06 PM ET
CBC News

Several more floors at a Quebec City hospital have been placed under quarantine after an outbreak of gastroenteritis that has already killed one person and infected dozens spread to another floor.

The virus causing the digestive tract disease was detected in late November in a long-term-care ward at Jeffery Hale Hospital and spread quickly, infecting at least 40 residents and staff members, and killing one elderly patient.
"[With] the first few cases on one of our floors, we had lots of people coming and going, and we managed to contain the outbreak on that floor," executive director Louis Hanrahan said Thursday. "But just as we were about to lift the quarantine, it spread to another floor, so we decided to quarantine all five floors."

Gastroenteritis is normally not a life-threatening infection among the general population, but it can cause fatal complications among the sick and elderly through stress to their immune system, Hanrahan said.

Several Quebec hospitals, including Montreal's Lakeshore hospital, are dealing with outbreaks of gastroenteritis. Its symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting and loss of appetite.

"Severa Quebec hospitals"
Again, makes me wonder if this might have been related to that Rimouski isolation of 9-year old.

Re: Lakeshore Hospital battles virus outbreak

There is a widespread outbreak of norwalk virus in Quebec.

They talked about on TV yesterday & told hospitals are nervous because it can be confuse with c.difficile.

If you make a research in the Francophone Quebec media, You'll find.

It was not a joke, in quebec-french, "J'ai l'flu" mean I had diarrea.

It can cause proble if someone translate it.
