Panic as more medical staff test positive for swine flu

LAHORE: Panic has gripped the staff of the Nawaz Sharif Social Security Hospital after a doctor and two nurses were diagnosed with swine flu (H1N1), a private TV channel reported on Saturday.

At least six people have been diagnosed with swine flu in Lahore. A physiotherapist at the hospital, Iftikhar Ahmed, died of the disease on December 8. Five others were also being treated for the disease, but the channel said two of them had been discharged from the hospital. The latest victims in the series of people testing positive for swine flu were Dr Nisar Ahmad and nurses Ruqayya and Seemal.

The doctor was recently moved to his house for a complete bed rest after receiving treatment in the intensive care unit. Talking to the channel, the hospital?s Medical Superintendent Dr Syeda Rahat Fatima said the nurses had been quarantined and the blood samples of the people they had been in contact with had also been sent for swine flu verification. The Punjab Health Department has alerted hospitals across the city afterto take necessary precautionary measures.

A Health Department spokesman said isolated facilities had been arranged at all hospitals for swine flu patients.
