Lagos Government Alerts Lagosians On Bird Flu

The Lagos state government is currently making plans to effectively combat the spread of the Avian Bird Flu from the Northern part of the country to Lagos. The Permasnent Secretary of the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture, Wale Raji made this known over the last Friday when he spoke with journalists. The Permanent Secretary stated that Lagos had an estimated population of 17million and constitutes the largest market for agricultural produce in Nigeria and as a result, the disease threatens serious economic implication.
The permanent secretary alerted Lagosians on symptoms of bird flu, which, according to him, include coughing, sneezing, cold, muscular pain, high fever, acute respiratory distress, extreme tiredness and death. He stated that it was expedient to take precautionary measures against the disease so that Nigerians may not be affected. For that reason, he stated that an Avian Flu Desk has been established at the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture, which would work round the clock and be manned by four competent officers with direct telephone lines to receive reports of any development for quick intervention and curtailment.
Mr. Raji added that Lagos state had been divided into six zones for effective coverage and that each zone would be manned by a team of Veterinary Officers with adequate support staff. The teams would monitor and inspect all farms within their zones and report any outbreak of suspected flu cases for quick intervention.
The zones include Epe division, with headquarters at Temu, Epe; Ikorodu division, with headquarters at Odogunyan Road, Ikorodu; Badagry division, with headquarters at Vet Office, Badagry; Ikeja/Agege/Alimosho Areas, with headquarters at Animal Hospital, Agege; Kosofe/Mushin division, with headquarters at Surulere Vet Office; and Lagos/Eti-Osa axis, with headquarters at Obalende and Ajah, Eti-Osa.
Each team would be equipped with telephone lines, which will be advertised soon to enable the public contact them.
