La swine flue deaths now up to 3
8/28/2009, 7:00 p.m. CDT

(AP) ? BATON ROUGE, La. - Two men have died of swine flu, bringing Louisiana's death toll this year from the virus to three, the state Department of Health and Hospitals said Friday.

Both men were adults, one from central Louisiana and one from southwest Louisiana.

The department said it won't give any other details, including possible underlying health conditions, to protect their families.

The news came the same day the state Office of Juvenile Justice said a youth prison at Bridge City had suspended visitation for two weeks because of a possible case of the new H1N1 virus.

The agency said Friday that the agency has not confirmed that the prisoner has that strain of flu, but has sent a culture for lab analysis.

As a precaution, visitation for the 126 youths was suspended until Sept. 13-or longer, if new cases of influenza are identified.

The health department's weekly update says the state has 579 lab-confirmed cases of the H1N1 flu virus. It says that, extrapolating from CDC data, the real case count in Louisiana is closer to 33,000.

State Health Officer Jimmy Guidry says good hygiene can help avoid spreading infections. That includes covering sneezes with a tissue and throwing it out, washing hands often, and avoiding close contact with sick people.

State confirms 7th death from H1N1 virus

Last Update: 9:34 am

The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals confirms a 7th person has died from complications from the H1N1 flu virus.

DHH says the individual was an adult male and lived in the Shreveport area, but would not release any other information about him.

Because coughs and sneezes spread the virus, the department recommends covering nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, throwing out the tissue, and washing hands often.

It also recommends staying home if you get the flu and staying at least three to six feet from anyone who has it. And, if you get flulike symptoms and have other high-risk conditions such as pregnancy, diabetes or heart or lung problems, see a doctor.
