An increase in cases of dengue fever has been noted in Reunion Island and the situation is being monitored vigilantly: since the start of the year, 84 cases of dengue fever have been recorded on the island.
During the southern summer, a season conducive to the proliferation of mosquitoes, let's adopt preventive measures to limit their installation and the risk of bites.
Epidemiological situation (Public Health France data)
No deaths have currently been reported.
84 cases of dengue fever have been recorded since the start of the year (twice as many as in 2023 over the same period).
27 cases were recorded from February 5 to 11 (compared to 16 cases the previous week).
More than half of the cases (52%) were identified in Saint Joseph, which has several clusters of active cases.
Distribution of cases by municipality:
Saint-Joseph: 14 cases
Saint-Paul: 4 cases
Buffer: 2 cases
Saint-Denis: 2 cases
Saint-Pierre, La Possession, Saint-Leu, Saint-Louis and Saint-André (1 case per municipality).
Given the evolution of the situation and the dispersion of cases in recent weeks, Gérard Cotellon, director general of ARS La Réunion, in agreement with Jérôme Filippini, prefect, decided on March 22, 2024 to activate the level 2B of the specific ORSEC system for combating arboviruses: Intensification of autochthonous viral circulation and risk of developing into an epidemic.
The increase in the number of dengue cases continues in Reunion: since the start of the year, 258 cases of dengue have been recorded, more than half of which are in the south of the island.
The prefect and the general director of the ARS wish to strengthen prevention messages to the population and mobilize all municipal and inter-municipal actors: the commitment of everyone is essential to avoid a resumption of the dengue epidemic.
The epidemiological situation
(Public Health France data)
SINCE JANUARY 1 , 2024
258 confirmed cases
40 trips to the emergency room
12 hospitalizations
Since the start of 2024, 258 cases of dengue have been recorded, which marks a seasonal increase in dengue cases, much higher than that observed in 2023 at the same period (53 cases as of 03/16/2023).
From February 26 to March 10, 2024, 108 cases were recorded (compared to 65 cases from February 12 to 25). This reflects an increase in the number of cases on the island, associated with increasing dispersion across the island. Indeed, if more than half of the cases (51%) were identified in Saint-Joseph where we observe several active clusters of cases, the number of municipalities affected by at least one case of dengue has increased.
Distribution of dengue cases recorded by municipality between February 26 and March 10:
SOUTH :
Saint-Joseph: 55 cases
Saint-Philippe: 11 cases
The Buffer: 7 cases
Saint-Pierre: 7 cases
Petite-Ile: 2 cases
WEST :
Saint-Paul: 8 cases
Saint-Leu: 4 cases
The Port: 2 cases
Possession: 2 cases
NORTHEAST :
Sainte-Marie: 1 case
Saint-André: 1 case
Sainte-Rose: 1 case
Dengue serotype 2 is exclusively in circulation.
The hospital impact remains moderate to date, with since the start of the year:
40 visits to the emergency room for syndrome compatible with dengue (mainly CHU Sud and CHOR);
for 2 weeks, the weekly number has been greater than 5.
12 hospitalizations, after going to the emergency room;
The hospital impact of dengue appears to be increasing moderately with 4 hospitalizations recorded between March 11 and 17.
Level 2B of the ORSEC plan against arboviruses
Level 2B of the ORSEC plan corresponds to an “ intensification of indigenous viral circulation in anticipation of an evolution towards an epidemic ” . This level provides in particular:
Strengthening public health and mosquito control actions across the island
Multi-partner actions for reinforced control in identified virus circulation areas : sanitation actions and maintenance of public and private spaces ( emptying of school grounds , pruning, intensified waste collection, etc.), awareness-raising and mobilization of the population, treatment actions
The identification of reinforcements that can be mobilized in an epidemic situation , for actions to combat larval breeding sites and insecticide treatment, and preparation for their possible mobilization (inventory of resources, qualifications, training, acquisition of equipment, etc.)
Information for health professionals , checking stocks with pharmacists, strengthening actions in health and medico-social establishments to combat mosquitoes and protect users and staff.
Vector control agents monitor, advise and intervene in cases of dengue fever
ARS vector control agents provide surveillance and advice to the population. To do this, they visit residents to :
advise them on the right actions to fight against mosquitoes , especially with the current rains;
eliminate anything that can contain stagnant water in yards and gardens: bowls, small objects, gutters, tires, plants that can retain water (pineapple plants, etc.).
They also intervene as early as possible around cases of dengue fever reported to the ARS to avoid the spread of the disease, by carrying out :
awareness-raising and elimination of larval breeding sites (mosquito nests) with residents,
insecticide treatments ; these treatments are absolutely necessary in order to eliminate as many adult mosquitoes as possible already infected with the virus.
Let's take the right actions to fight against dengue!
Vector control helps to prevent the occurrence of an arbovirus epidemic or to contain it, provided that the entire population mobilizes on the right actions on a daily basis. To prevent mosquitoes from settling in your home (in your garden, yard, etc.) :
Empty containers containing stagnant water (cups, buckets, plants that retain water, used tires, bulky items, etc.)
Maintain the gutters
Dispose of green waste respecting collection days
Check water reserves (cisterns, rainwater collectors, etc.)
Cover or store unused pools …
To protect yourself from mosquito bites :
Use repellent, mosquito nets for sleeping and for babies, bedridden people, etc.
Continue to protect yourself , even if you have already been sick with dengue fever
Consult a doctor at the first symptoms :
Fever, headache, muscle/joint pain, nausea, vomiting... consult your doctor. He will prescribe a sample to be taken in a medical analysis laboratory to confirm the diagnosis of the disease. If you are sick:
Continue to protect yourself against mosquito bites to avoid transmitting the disease to those around you and monitor your health
Consult your doctor, or in his absence, an emergency service, if your state of health deteriorates .

The increase in the number of dengue cases continues in Reunion: since the start of the year, 320 cases of dengue have been recorded.
