Health: an imported case of cholera in Reunion from India

After Mayotte, cholera is now coming to Reunion Island. The first case recorded in 2024 in the department had recently stayed in India.

The Reunion Regional Health Agency (ARS) informs this Thursday March 21, 2024 of the detection of a case of cholera on the island yesterday March 20.

According to the health authority, the person concerned has recently visited India.

“Contact tracing” as a precaution

This is therefore an imported case of cholera. However, this led to “contact tracing” procedures in those around this person, as a precautionary measure.

This is the first case of cholera observed in Reunion this year 2024. The last imported case dates back to 2022, in a traveler from the Middle East.

Low risk of spread

But the risk of spreading this disease is low in Reunion, underlines the ARS, which wants to be reassuring. Indeed, this disease mainly affects countries where access to good hygiene conditions remains difficult.

At the end of February, Professor Xavier Deparis, director of monitoring and health security at ARS Réunion, emphasized in the Matinale de Réunion La 1ère that cholera did not present a major threat to the population of Réunion .

The risk of a cholera epidemic in Reunion Island is lower, he recalled, " low, if not zero" , " because the Reunion Islanders are in good health, and we have drinking water on the tap and we do not do not drink potentially contaminated river water.

An imported case of cholera in Reunion from India

News
Diseases, Prevention, Alerts March 21, 2024

A case of cholera was declared to ARS La Réunion on March 20, 2024. It concerns a person who had recently stayed in India. Necessary precautionary measures are being implemented and contact tracing is underway.

There is a low risk of spreading this disease in Reunion. The last imported case of cholera occurred in 2022, coming from the Middle East.

ARS La Réunion maintains the information and awareness system put in place for travelers arriving at Roland Garros airport.

Fast and secure support

On March 20, a case of cholera was detected in Reunion. This person was treated at the University Hospital and his condition does not cause any concern.

As soon as the case was confirmed and in order to avoid any spread of the disease, precautionary measures were put in place at the hospital.

The ARS of Reunion has initiated contact tracing in order to identify contact and co-exposed cases, and provide them, if necessary, with the first treatments.

What is cholera?

Cholera is an acute bacterial digestive infection manifesting mainly by diarrhea and vomiting. Most cases have few or no symptoms; however, some develop severe complications linked to intense dehydration due to diarrhea.

The bacteria is transmitted through contaminated water or food, and dirty hands.

Severe forms of cholera particularly affect people living in poor hygienic conditions, suffering from malnutrition and without access to drinking water.

This is why the spread of this disease in Reunion Island is very unlikely.

The imported case of cholera in Reunion invalidated

After analyzes by the French National Reference Center for vibrios and cholera, the suspected case of cholera declared on March 20, 2024 in Reunion, coming from India, is invalidated.

ARS La Réunion maintains the information and awareness system put in place for travelers at Roland Garros airport.

Context and results of the National Reference Center

Cholera is an acute bacterial digestive infection, manifested mainly by diarrhea and vomiting, and due to the ingestion of water or food contaminated by Vibrio cholerae bacilli ( cholera vibrio bacteria) belonging to serogroups O1 and O139.

The bacilli of serogroups O1 and O139 produce a toxin which will cause acute diarrhea and severe forms of cholera in infected people.

The person who had stayed in India , and for whom a case of cholera had been declared on March 20, 2024 in Reunion , presented symptoms of the disease. The results of the first analyzes carried out at the Reunion University Hospital showed that the person was contaminated by cholera vibrios, but without being able to identify the serogroups of these vibrios.

This is why the samples were sent to the National Reference Center for Vibrios and French Cholera (Institut Pasteur in Paris) for confirmation of the diagnosis. After analysis, the results show that the Vibrio cholerae bacilli identified do not belong to serogroups O1 and O139.

Consequently, the suspected case of cholera in Reunion Island is overturned.

Fast and secure support

The person had been taken care of at the CHU.

As soon as the case was reported and in order to avoid any spread of the disease, precautionary measures were put in place at the hospital.

As a reminder, any report of a suspected or confirmed case of cholera must be declared to the ARS.

Thus, the ARS La Réunion had initiated contact tracing in order to identify contact and co-exposed cases, and have them deliver, if necessary, the first treatments.

Even if the risks of contamination are very low in the territory, early reporting of cases upon suspicion is necessary.

This allows rapid hygiene measures to be implemented and investigations of contact persons to be initiated.
