Health dept: Tick bites led to death of Pali villagers
PANJIM: Directorate of Health Services has finally broken its silence over the confidential report about the mysterious deaths of nine villagers in Pali, Sattari, by declaring that they were caused by an outbreak of Kyasanur Forest Disease.

By TEAM HERALD | 15 Apr, 2015, 01:00AM IST

A month-long joint study by the Directorate of Health Services and a private institute finally made a breakthrough, declaring that the mystery illness was caused by tick bites, but the report which was in the possession of the directorate for the last three days, was kept under wraps.
Herald had broken the story on Tuesday over the silence of directorate on the mysterious deaths reported at Pali and the fear prevailing among villagers over inaction by the directorate.
State Epidemiologist Dr Utkarsha Betodkar on Monday informed Herald that the common detection fund in all the samples is of KFD, which is a tick borne disease which spreads through tick bite. ?You cannot eliminate this disease but it can be controlled, tick bite control measures should be taken in the area of Pali,? Dr Betodkar recommended...

Goa villagers refuse vaccination against killer disease
Wednesday, May 20, 2015

Panaji (IANS): Goa state health authorities are despaired at refusal of residents of a village to get themselves vaccinated against a rare disease which spreads from monkeys and has caused nine deaths over the last few months.

After sourcing 2,000 vaccines from the Virus Diagnostic Laboratory in Karnataka and being unable to persuade the villagers of Pali, 55 km from here, over the need to get vaccinated, officials are now planning to create awareness about the rare but killer Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD) and its effects.

?We have done all the preparations for the KFD vaccine. Today, we went to the field and created awareness about the KFD vaccine,? said Surekha Parulekar, health officer at the Valpoi government health facility in North Goa.

Monsoon rains help tame monkey fever outbreak
K R Rajeev,TNN | Jun 29, 2015, 03.54 PM IST

KOZHIKODE: While monsoon season is normally associated with peak disease activity in the state, the recent spell of heavy rains have helped tame the outbreak of Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD) or monkey fever in the state, which has claimed 11 lives so far in Wayanad.

With the monsoon season marking the transformation of the disease transmitting Haemaphysalis spinigera nymphs to adult ticks, health authorities say there has been a decrease in the number of new KFD cases being reported over the past two weeks.
...
The number of people who have so far tested positive for the disease stood at 102 along with 213 suspected cases on Sunday.

15 more show symptoms of monkey fever

Umesh Isalkar | TNN | Feb 12, 2016, 12.18 PM IST

The state health officials have identified 15 more patients with symptoms of Kayasanur forest disease or monkey fever in villages close to Ker village in Sindhudurg district, where the outbreak of the tick-borne viral infection was reported a few days ago.

Health officials have sent the blood samples of the suspected patients to the Pune based National Institute of Virology (NIV). It is a highly pathogenic viral disease and can only be tested in labs with high bio-safety standards, an official said.

Earlier, 18 of the 28 blood samples of patients, all from Ker village, had tested positive for the viral infection at the NIV. The monkey fever outbreak, first reported in Maharashtra, has put the public health machinery on its toes. Officials have initiated tick and fever surveillance in the region to check the spread of it.

"We have drawn blood samples of 15 people from Zolambe village, which is 25km from Ker village, and have sent them for tests. A monkey was also found dead near Zolambe village three days ago," district health officer Yogesh Sale said.

Much ado being made of two 'monkey fever' deaths: Parsekar
Thursday, 25 February 2016 10:58Published in Goa0 Comments

Panaji: Much ado is being made about deaths of two senior citizens, caused due to the rare Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD), Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said on Wednesday, adding both were beyond the state's average mortality age of 70.

Health minister and deputy chief minister Francis D'Souza, who addressed a joint press conference with Parsekar, said the deaths were a result of complications caused by diabetes, along with KFD, referred to as 'monkey disease'.

"Much is being made of two deaths. In Goa, average life of a citizen is 70 years. If one dies at 76 or 78, you cannot say he died of disease. It could be a natural death. Average life span (in Goa) is 70 years and after you cross 70 years, immunity is decreased," Parsekar said.
