Father causes bird flu scare at airport

Published Date: December 19, 2007
KUWAIT: Officials reported that an Indian expatriate was just completing his travel procedures at Kuwait International Airport to travel to Hyderabad City in India by Indian Airlines. They said he presented two tickets - one for him and second for his eight-year-old child. Customs personnel however noticed that he approached the counter alone leaving his child in the waiting hall.

The customs personnel then asked him about the child to which he answered them that he suspected that his child might be suffering from the bird flu virus, which is why he wanted to complete the travel procedures and only then get him.

The customs personnel however reported the matter instantly to the relevant authorities and the expat and his child were immediately transferred to the concerned health center at the Ministry of Health.
The father was confined to a special room and the health center started collecting the required information and samples in order to examine the family and persons who the child used to associate in addition to pupils at the school that he studied at. Further tests are ongoing. :tiphat: http://www.kuwaittimes.net/read_news.php?newsid=MTE5MTAwODQzNA==

"... When an immigration officer asked the man about his son, the man reportedly told the officer that his son who was leaving on the same flight with him ‘may be’ suffering from bird flu. ..."

We can see that an immigration medical scanning procedure is based on the fact that:
the entering travel subject must be a "bigger" doctor than an bf specialist doctor
to sucessfuly ensure a prevention of an imported alien illness through the country border.
(change that "asking" policy, establish real medical control measures!)

Suspect H5N1 in Kuwait Hospital

Recombinomics Commentary
December 19, 2007

An Indian man and his son who is believed to be suffering bird flu have been quarantined in Kuwait, reports Al-Wasat daily. The disease was discovered by chance when the man was on his way to Hyderabad aboard an Indian flight No IC862. When an immigration officer asked the man about his son, the man reportedly told the officer that his son who was leaving on the same flight with him ‘may be’ suffering from bird flu. The Infectious Diseases Hospital, where the son was reportedly confined, refused to comment on the case or even admit the child was admitted at that place. Immigration officers at the airport referred both passengers for medical examination and a report showed the boy was indeed suffering from bird flu. The concerned authorities are collecting information about the family and the school where the boy was studying as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of others.

The above comments describe the hospitalization of a suspect bird flu patient in Kuwait. As noted, information on contacts, including schoolmates, is being collected, suggesting the case is more than a symptomatic traveler reported by an overly concerned third party.

H5N1 in Kuwait would not be a surprise. Earlier this year, Kuwait culled over one million birds, and the H5N1 was said to be related to the Uva Lake strain. Linkage of H5N1 to outbreaks in Pakistan or Saudi Arabia would not be a surprise. Pakistan is reporting laboratory confirmed cases in poultry, wild birds, and patients.

More information on the father and son, including recent travel history and contacts, would be useful.

All of the flights for India Air can be download. The flight listed appears to be local

Re: Kuwait-Suspected BF in 1 at airport

From KUNA. Not sure which newspaper has the story about no bf in Kuwait. I see a couple of newspaper names below -- el-Qabas and Al Watan ("Homeland") -- but I don't see the story in either one of those. ??

The statement, though, seems to be from the Ministry of Agriculture, so you would think it would be a statement about no bf in poultry anywhere in the country.
