Cage your falcons ? 2 more cases of bird flu found; Sufficient stocks of Tamiflu http://www.arabtimesonline.com/arabtimes/kuwait/Viewdet.asp?ID=9861&cat=a KUWAIT CITY: The number of bird flu cases discovered in Kuwait on Saturday rose to 49 as samples of two more birds were tested positive for the deadly H5N1 strain, says Dr Ahmad Al-Shatti, spokesman for the Ministry of Health. ?One of the infected birds was discovered in al-Salam area while the other was found in Wafra. The birds were culled by the authorities,? Dr Al-Shatti added. Kuwait on Friday reported five cases of bird flu in chicken, falcon and quail. The authorities have taken a number of measures to contain the outbreak of the disease and the latest one being the temporary closure of all poultry stores in the country. Asked why poultry in the country was not being vaccinated against avian flu, Dr Al-Shatti went on to say that ?the bird flu situation is being regularly monitored by the Public Authority for Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAAFR) and the vaccination measure falls under its purview and it will act at an appropriate time.? He also said that adequate measures are being taken to ensure that the migratory birds to do not spread avian flu in the country. ?Bird hunters should avoid shooting down birds as they may be carriers of the deadly disease. We also ask bird hunters to cooperate with the authorities who are doing everything they can to contain the outbreak of the disease. Falcon owners should keep their birds caged so that they do no come in contact with migratory birds.? No human cases of the disease have been reported to date by the authorities as tests conducted on the samples of bird handlers came back negative. Replying to a question, Dr Al-Shatti said he does not have the exact figure on the number of birds culled since the outbreak last month. To a question as to whether the health ministry has placed any fresh orders for the Tamiflu drug, Dr Al-Shatti said there are sufficient stocks of Tamiflu to meet any emergent situation. ?We have over 10 million Tamiflu capsules. Moreover, we have not discovered any human case of bird flu so far.? The total number of people tested so far is 121, added Shatti. ?The fumigation campaign will continue until the disease is eradicated,? he added.

Speaking to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), he said teams of the Public Authority for Agricultural Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAAFR) had overseen the culling of birds, noting the committee was working transparently and objectively. Moreover, he said the teams would be expanding their scope of work after completing their survey and spraying of the Kabd, Abdali, and Wafra areas, adding that vet labs would also be beefed up. Al-Shatti warned against the H5N1 strain of the virus, responsible for the onset of bird flu, saying it not only spread from bird to bird and bird to human, but also human to human. Bird flu symptoms in humans include fever, cough, soar throat, fatigue, chills, loss of appetite, and bronchial inflammations that cause breathing difficulties and eventually death, he said. Healthy birds, he said, contracted the H5N1 from secretions of infected birds; saliva, mucus, and feces, as well as eggs, should their shells be broken. He explained that Tamiflu and Relenza had proven effective in protecting humans against the virus, but called on the public to forego the hobby of bird hunting this season. The UN's Food and Agriculture Organization had warned the bird flu crisis was not short-term, but would remain an urgent issue for several years.(pickup previous) mf.hs. ema </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE> http://www.kuna.net.kw/home/print.aspx?Language=en&DSNO=958257

Spokesman of the committee Dr. Ahmad Al-Shatti told the press that about 50 bird flu cases were discovered among birds lately, saying that two more cases were added due to samples taken from dead chickens during the recent discovery. The health official denied the discovery of any human bird flu cases, revealing that samples taken from 200 people involved in the poultry industry came out negative for the disease. Some 45 units from Public Authority for Agriculture and Fish Resources (PAAFR), stated the official, have covered 90 percent of Wafrah, Abdali, Sulaibiyah, Kabd, and Al-Ahmadi areas, spraying farms and stables with disinfectants. He revealed that most discovered cases were found in house farms and not in poultry factories which as a matter of course stick to high levels of health regulations. Al-Shatti pointed out that not every bird's death could be attributed to H5N1, saying that laboratory tests would determine this fact. Bird flu cases detected in Jahra, Farwaniya HLT-KUWAIT-BIRD FLU Bird flu cases detected in Jahra, Farwaniya KUWAIT, March 6 (KUNA) -- The Public Authority for Agriculture and Fish Resources Affairs (PAAFRA) announced Tuesday that according to notifications from citizens, two new bird flu cases were detected in both Jahra and Farwaniya governorates. The first concerns a bird flu hit falcon at Al-Naeem neighborhood in Jahra and the second a dead chicken at Al-Rihab neighborhood in Farwaniya. The Kuwaiti National Joint Committee on Combating Bird Flu said in a press statement released here today that total bird flu cases in the country are up to 52 that originated from various Kuwaiti areas. It added that the cases are primarily restricted to pens and household farms, which underlines keenness of citizens on keeping birds in cages and not allowing them to mix with migrating ones. Some 45 units from PAAFRA, have earlier toured 90 percent of Wafrah, Abdali, Sulaibiyah, Kabd, and Al-Ahmadi areas, and sprayed farms and stables with disinfectants. Most discovered cases were detected in house farms and not in poultry factories which stick strictly to all health regulations. In fact not every bird's death could be attributed to H5N1, and only laboratory tests certify this fact.(end) kt. http://www.kuna.net.kw/Home/Story.aspx?Language=en&DSNO=958714

KUWAIT - Number of bf cases reach 50, but no infections in humans/commercial poultry

hawkeye said:
Number of bird flu cases reach 50, but no infections in humans or commercial poultry farms KUWAIT CITY: The number of confirmed cases of the deadly strain of bird flu has risen to 50, the Health Ministry said Monday, but no humans have been infected nor commercial poultry farms. "Tests on 200 samples from handlers (of poultry) were negative," the ministry said in a statement. "There are no cases of bird flu in humans so far." The first H5N1 strain infections in the recent outbreak were announced late February in falcons, turkeys, and chicken. Before that, only one case of the deadly strain had been registered in Kuwait when it was found on a migrating flamingo in 2005. The infected birds were found in house pens and small farms in 30 locations around the country, the statement said. Commercial-sized poultry farms were under strict control by specialized teams that fumigate them and take samples for tests regularly, it said. Authorities have closed down the Kuwait Zoo and the bird markets, and banned all imports and exports of birds as precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the disease. Bird flu has killed at least 167 people worldwide since it broke out in Asian poultry stocks in 2003. It remains hard for humans to catch, but experts fear the virus could mutate into a form that passes easily among people. de-jbm

Dr. Rashed Owaish, spokesman for the Kuwaiti Health Ministry, was quoted as saying that the virus was found Thursday in a chicken in Wafra area, 120 km south of Kuwait City. "Wafra has reported the maximum number of bird flu cases and our teams are working in overdrive in that area to prevent the spread of the disease," said the spokesman. The spokesman confirmed most of the cases were detected in backyard poultry and not in poultry farms, noting that no human cases of bird flu have been discovered since the outbreak late last month. "The situation is under control as the number of cases is decreasing by the day and we are hopeful we will be able to eradicate the disease soon," said the spokesman. Owaish said a team of experts from the International Animal Health Organization have held talks with officials from the Kuwaiti Health Ministry on ways to prevent the spread of the disease. "The team will submit a detailed report to the Health Ministry pertaining to the bird flu situation in the country on Friday," he added.
