The birds were culled by the authorities,? Dr Al-Shatti added. Kuwait on Friday reported five cases of bird flu in chicken, falcon and quail. The authorities have taken a number of measures to contain the outbreak of the disease and the latest one being the temporary closure of all poultry stores in the country. Asked why poultry in the country was not being vaccinated against avian flu, Dr Al-Shatti went on to say that ?the bird flu situation is being regularly monitored by the Public Authority for Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAAFR) and the vaccination measure falls under its purview and it will act at an appropriate time.? He also said that adequate measures are being taken to ensure that the migratory birds to do not spread avian flu in the country. ?Bird hunters should avoid shooting down birds as they may be carriers of the deadly disease. We also ask bird hunters to cooperate with the authorities who are doing everything they can to contain the outbreak of the disease. Falcon owners should keep their birds caged so that they do no come in contact with migratory birds.? No human cases of the disease have been reported to date by the authorities as tests conducted on the samples of bird handlers came back negative. Replying to a question, Dr Al-Shatti said he does not have the exact figure on the number of birds culled since the outbreak last month. To a question as to whether the health ministry has placed any fresh orders for the Tamiflu drug, Dr Al-Shatti said there are sufficient stocks of Tamiflu to meet any emergent situation. ?We have over 10 million Tamiflu capsules. Moreover, we have not discovered any human case of bird flu so far.? The total number of people tested so far is 121, added Shatti. ?The fumigation campaign will continue until the disease is eradicated,? he added.
