Srinagar, Oct 21: Day after the valley-based [COLOR=#003366! important][FONT=verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif][COLOR=#003366! important][FONT=verdana,Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif]poultry[/FONT][/FONT][/COLOR][/COLOR] farmers alleged that the government is promoting the interest of outside state poultry dealers in Kashmir, chairman Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Federation (KTMF) Haji Jan Muhammad Koul today criticized the authorities in animal husbandry department for ?lifting ban on import of layer birds.?
While seeking chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad?s intervention in the issue, Koul said that department has failed to explain the reasons for lifting the ban on layer birds.
Koul said the department had banned the import of the layer bird following the outbreak of bird flue in some states in India in February 2006.
?On October 8 the department revived the order and revoked the ban,? said Koul adding that by lifting the ban department has done great injustice to the people here.
?Outside the state the layer bird is sold just at Rs 7 and people there use it as feed for dogs.? Haji added.
While appealing the people not to purchase layer birds he said it is harmful to health and has been banned for human consumption in India.
The chairman urged the department to re-impose the ban on the layer bird import to the valley in the interest of people.
The chairman also appealed the chief minister to investigate the matter.
Mention to be made that Friday the Kashmir valley poultry farmers association alleged that the government has ignored this industry in Kashmir while promoting the interests of non-local companies by compelling the local dealers to enter into contract farming.
Talking to Greater Kashmir members of the association had alleged that the government has given certain incentives to a non-local company at the cost of local dealers. The member had said that during the outbreak of bird flu the government did not extend any support to the poultry farmers who have suffered huge losses.
?Instead of giving some relief to poultry industry the government is charging Rs 2 tax on every chick that is imported to Kashmir,? they told Greater Kashmir.
