Two more H1N1 influenza deaths have been reported in Kansas, it was announced Monday.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment confirmed the deaths of a 72-year-old man from northeast Kansas and a 53-year-old woman from the Wichita metropolitan area.

The man was confirmed to have the H1N1 virus Thursday. His death was reported to KDHE on Friday. According to KDHE officials, the man had an underlying medical condition which put him at greater risk of severe complications from influenza.

The woman was confirmed to have H1N1 on Oct. 27. Her death was reported to KDHE on Monday. She also had an underlying health condition.

To date, 14 people have died this year as a result of being infected with the H1N1 virus in Kansas.

KDHE secretary Roderick Bremby and state health officer Jason Eberhart-Phillips expressed sympathy and offered their deepest condolences to the families involved.

"People with specific underlying health conditions are at especially high risk of serious health problems if they get H1N1 flu," said Eberhart-Phillips. "While we wait for enough vaccine to become available to protect everyone against this infection, there are still many steps we all can take to reduce its spread."

Precautions include washing hands; staying home at least 24 hours after a fever; coughing and sneezing into a tissue; and eating a balanced diet, drinking plenty of water and getting enough rest and exercise.

Meanwhile, the Shawnee County Health Agency's second of four public H1N1 vaccination clinics in Topeka is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Kansas Expocentre, near S.W. 19th and Topeka Boulevard.

Free vaccinations will be given while the supply lasts and will be directed to health-care professionals, pregnant women, children 6 months through 18 years of age and caregivers of children 6 months or younger.

Other clinics are scheduled for November 12th and 19th at the Kansas Expocentre.

For information about the H1N1 virus, call (877) 427-7317 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Questions also can be submitted by sending e-mail to H1N1fluinfo@kdheks.gov. Additional information is available at www.kdheks.gov.
