Ongoing whooping cough outbreak demonstrates importance of immunizations, officials say

Area health departments are urging parents, guardians and caregivers of children and infants to comply with the national pertussis vaccination guidelines, especially with the increased number of pertussis cases reported this year.

So far there have been 26 cases of pertussis in Wyandotte County, including 11 cases that are laboratory-confirmed, according to Joe Connor, Wyandotte County Health Department director. Nine of the other cases are probable and six are suspected. Last year there were only eight to 10 cases of pertussis in Wyandotte County.

While there is an increase, the health department considers it very manageable, Connor stated...

Sedgwick County seeing rise in whooping cough, West Nile virus cases

The Sedgwick County Health Department said Tuesday that it is seeing an increased number of reported cases for whooping cough and West Nile virus.

County health officials said in a news release that is has received 47 reported cases of whooping cough, also known as pertussis...

The Johnson County Department of Health and Environment continues to receive reports of suspect, probable and confirmed cases of pertussis. As of Sept. 12, there have been 311 reported cases of pertussis in 2012, as compared to only 40 cases during the same time period in 2011.
