Korea to Seek Poultry Exports After Eradicating Bird Flu Virus
By Sungwoo Park
Aug. 18 (Bloomberg) --
South Korea plans to ask countries including Japan to resume imports of poultry after declaring itself free of bird flu last week.
The Northeast Asian nation has eradicated the H5N1 strain of avian influenza and met guidelines set by the World Organization for Animal Health, the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries said today on its Web site (http://mifaff.korea.kr/mifaff/jsp/m...ion=news_view&_property=p_sec_1&_id=155309747) .
South Korea culled 8.6 million birds between April 1 and May 12 in its first outbreak of the virus in more than a year.
It exported 2,450 tons of chicken in 2007 to places including Hong Kong, Vietnam and Japan, according to the ministry.
Under OIE rules, a country can regain a bird flu-free status if there's no confirmed outbreak of the virus more than three months after the last measure is taken and there are no positive test results, the ministry said.
