The following is an English language translation of a Japanese language news report that ran earlier today on the website of the Yomiuri newspaper.

I haven't included the Japanese language text in my post out of concern that it would cause display problems for forum readers. However, the link will take you to the original news item.

Over 1 million quail eggs potentially infected with avian influenza virus distributed [in S. Korea]

Yomiuri Shimbun
December 13, 2006, 12:19

Seoul, Nakamura Yuichiro

The Jeollabuk [North Jeolla] provincial government confirmed today that quail eggs possibly infected with the avian influenza virus have been shipped to regions throughout Korea from a poultry farm in Gimje City that was previously linked to a large-scale die-off of avian influenza virus-infected quails.

Authorities have begun the process of tracing the shipping distribution routes in an attempt to recover the possibly contaminated eggs.

The poultry farm in question experienced a mass die-off of some 3,000 quails between the 8th and 11th of this month. Detailed tests following the outbreak confirmed that the deaths were caused by a highly pathogenic form of avian influenza virus. According to the Yonhap News Agency, between late November (when the virus is estimated to have infected the quails) and the 8th of this month, the poultry farm in question shipped more than 1,000,000 possibly infected quail eggs to points throughout the country, without subjecting them to any disinfection.

Are quail eggs a delicacy in Korea?

I don't know if they are considered a delicacy, but my husband was just in S. Korea and he was served hard boiled quail eggs in his salad.

see http://www.cityfarmer.org/quail2.html

"quail possess a remarkable resistance to disease, start laying at six weeks of age, and can be consumed at four to five weeks of age. The meat is fortified with nutrients and has a very low cholesterol percentage."

Quail eggs are useable for folks allergic to chicken eggs & Asians have raised them for centuries.
