Korea Confirms First Two Cases of NDM-1
Korea has confirmed two cases of a superbacteria that experts say can't be treated by even the most powerful class of antibiotics.
This is the first time the multi-drug resistant super bug called NDM-1 CRE has been found in Korea.
NDM-1 is an enzyme carried by bacteria that alters the gene make-up of the microorganism, causing it to be resistant to almost all antibiotics.
It was first discovered in 2009 in a Swedish national patient who acquired a drug-resistant bacterial infection in New Delhi, India.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare said on Tuesday the two patients had significantly weak immune systems to begin with, due to long-term hospitalization and pre-existing medical conditions at the time they were diagnosed.
