The first Japanese encephalitis patient was confirmed in Korea this year. About five weeks earlier than last year, the quarantine authorities asked to follow preventive rules as mosquito activities began.

The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said a woman in her 60s who visited a medical institution on the 15th of last month due to symptoms such as high fever, chills, and vomiting was confirmed to have Japanese encephalitis on the 9th.

Epidemiologic investigation revealed that the patient had a history of mosquito bites and had not been vaccinated against Japanese encephalitis. Patients with underlying diseases such as chronic renal failure are currently being hospitalized.

Japanese encephalitis patients in Korea usually occur from August to November, and about 80% of all patients are concentrated from September to October. By age, people in their 50s and older accounted for 65.9%.
