Chikungunya: 11 test positive
KOLKATA, Oct. 26: The Hooghly district health administration has sounded an alert after Chikungunya virus was found in the blood samples of at least 11 persons in three blocks of the district.
These blocks ~ Singur, Chanditala and Khanakul ~ have been declared ?Chikungunya affected? areas.
"We had sent 30 blood samples for test. The reports revealed that 11 people from three blocks ~ Singur, Khanakul and Chanditala ~ are carrying the Chikungunya virus. An emergency meeting was held on 23 October following which an alert was sounded. The blood sample reports of the patients reached the district health department recently,? Dr Bhusan Chakraborty, Hooghly's chief medical officer of health (CMOH) said.
District health officials, in collaboration with local panchayat authorities, are organising awareness camps at villages from where reports of people suffering from Chikungunya have come. ?Chikungunya was reported from Mrigala in Chanditala and Bara in Singur. In Khanakul block, reports of people suffering from Chikungunya came from Nadipur, Palaspai I and II panchayats," the CMOH added.
According to Dr Chakraborty, three residents of Chanditala are suffering from Chikungunya while four people each from Singur and Khanakul have been affected by the same disease. He, however, said that the situation has not gone beyond control yet and there was nothing to panic.
According to reports, 104 residents of Chanditala, 187 people from Singur and 133 inhabitants of Khanakul have been suffering from high fever for the past few days. ?Those who have been affected with Chikungunya are being treated in their homes. We have sent medical teams to all Chikungunya affected villages. All block medical health officials (BMOHs) have been asked to keep a close watch in their respective areas, Dr Chakraborty said adding that there was no reports of Dengue in Hooghly till today. n SNS
