Kerala: Rat fever death toll rises amid Cholera

KOZHIKODE: Amidst health authorities? all-out attempts to tackle the spread of leptospirosis - rat fever- in the region, the epidemic claimed two more lives in the district� on Wednesday. The deceased are Savithri, 72, hailing from West Hill in Kozhikode and Vellakachathan, 35, of Nellipoil Pathippara Colony, near Kodenchery. Creating more problems for the health authorities, cholera outbreak is also confirmed from Payimbra of the Kuruvattoor village in the district. Janaki, 76, was hospitalised after being diagnosed with cholera on Wednesday.

Deputy DMO Dr Appunni said that� after cholera was confirmed, health authorities had taken steps to check the spread of the disease further. ?Health workers have visited Payambra and the adjacent areas and carried out mass preventive measures like chlorinating the wells and awareness programmes,? he said. On Wednesday, 519 fever cases were reported from various parts of the district. As many as 18 patients have been admitted in various hospitals owing to fever. As many as 22 deaths due to leptospirosis were reported from the district during the past two weeks and 24 patients are undergoing treatment at the Medical College.

Kerala Govt to open ?fever clinics' to combat epidemic

The Kerala Government will open ?fever clinics' in medical colleges, district and taluk hospitals and, if possible, in private hospitals, to combat the spread of leptospirosis (rat fever) in the Malabar region, according to the Minister for Health, Mr Adoor Prakash.

A Central team would visit the State to assess the situation, he added.

The Minister said that 256 suspected cases of leptospirosis were detected in Kozhikode district, of which 33 case were confirmed. Similarly, 43 deaths so far were suspected to have been caused by the disease, of which two had been confirmed, he noted.

A total of 126 confirmed cases of leptospirosis and 14 deaths have been reported from the northern districts ?� Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasargod ? from January till September this year.

The number of suspected cases of leptospirosis and deaths during the same period are 562 and 97, respectively.

According to Director of Health Services P K Jameela, there has been an increase in the number of cases during the last three weeks.� ?As per statistics, leptospirosis cases are most reported during September, October and November. This year also, the situation appears quite similar. Through effective sanitation drives and awareness campaigns, we can prevent deaths in the coming months,?? Jameela said.

Kozhikode district tops the list in the number of suspected cases and suspected deaths with 256 and 43, respectively. In Malappuram, a total of 103 suspected cases and 15 suspected deaths were reported from January till this month.

ALAPPUZHA: One more death, suspected to be caused by rat fever, was reported in the Alappuzha district on Thursday.� The victim, Kunjumon, 40, died a day after he was admitted to Cherthala Government Hospital on Wednesday.

The Cherthala resident, who was suffering from joint pain and jaundice, was immediately referred to the Kottayam Medical College, after his case became serious. �

The district, which had reported at least 130 cases of rat fever in the last year, has come down tremendously this year, with only 48 cases being reported till now.

Majority of people affected by Leptospirosis (Weil?s disease or rate fever) in Kerala, the outbreak of which has reached epidemical levels, are those who have been engaged in sanitation and waste disposal services under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme (NREGP).

The Kerala Health Department has called for a report on the situation following indications that this was caused by failures in the distribution and administration of preventive medicine among the workers. As per rough estimates, Kerala has more than 1,500 cases of confirmed Leptospirosis cases and about 100 have already been dead due to the disease so far this year.

Kozhikode: The outbreak of various types of epidemics is literally killing Kerala, and especially Malabar, with the death toll rising to more than 50. Since the serious chikungunya epidemic of 2006-07, various epidemics have been attacking the state especially in the monsoon season. While it has been the southern districts which were mostly affected by the fevers earlier, this time the epidemics have spread to Malabar also.

The epidemic flu is more in Malabar than in the southern districts this year. Rat fever or Leptospirosis has been confirmed in Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram in Malabar as well as Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram districts. The Health department has issued extra warning notices in the districts. Four more people died in the state yesterday due to rat fever, in Kasargod, Kannur and Palakkad. Other diseases rattling the state now are Hepatitis B, malaria, cholera, Japanese encephalitis, dengue fever etc.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Four more persons affected with rat fever died in the state on Friday, taking the toll to 45 in the period from January to September.

�Of the four deaths, two were reported from� Ernakulam, one was reported from Malappuram and one from Alappuzha.

Apart from these� deaths, seven new cases� of rat fever were reported from various parts of the state.� Of the seven, three were reported from Ernakulam, one from Palakkad, two from Malappuram and one from Kozhikode. In the case of Hepatitis, 47 cases were confirmed, of which eight cases were from Kottayam.

Fever claims 11 lives in Kerala

Eleven people died of infectious diseases in various parts of the state on Friday even as Malappuram district medical officer was placed under suspension for dereliction of duty.

The DMO Dr Sameera was suspended on the orders of Health Minister Adoor Prakash.

The deaths were reported from Ernakulam, Alappuzha, Thrissur, Malappuram and Kasargod. More than 100 people are undergoing treatment for leptospirosis and nearly 50 for jaundice in various hospitals.

Cases of typhoid, diarrhoea and malaria have also been reported from various parts of the state.

Rat fever: Central doctors' team visits Kasargod


KASARGOD: A central team of doctors visited the fever-hit areas of Kasargod district yesterday, even as two more persons under treatment at Kozhikode medical college died due to rat fever.

The central team consisted of Dr UPS Rana, National Institute of Communicable Diseases joint director Dr Amit Karat and Dr Raghu.

Later, the team left for Wayanad in the evening. They would visit colonies and other fever affected areas. There would be district level analysis meet in Kalpetta.

On Saturday, eight persons had died due to fever in the state and four in Kasargod, one each in Kozhikode, Thrissur, Idukki and Palakkad districts.

179 deaths due to viral fever in Kerala: Minister

Thiruvananthapuram: CPI-M led LDF opposition on Tuesday staged a walkout in the Kerala assembly protesting against government's "failure" to check spread of various types of viral fever, including leptospirosis that had claimed 179 lives so far.

Lack of medicines and shortage of doctors in government hospitals have led to this serious situation, former Kerala Finance Minister Thomas Issac said while seeking leave for an adjournment motion on the matter.


Issac said more than 300 persons have died of various viral infections in the state in the last few months and about 10,000 people were suffering from fever in the state.

PERUMBAVOOR/TRIPUNITHURA:: Two more people succumbed to fever in different parts of the district. While the cause of one death is attributed to rat fever, the other is unconfirmed.

Prasad Lazar(40) of Matamana, Thurithi in Kurumppampady died owing to rat fever at Lissy Hospital in Ernakulam.

KOCHI: As many as eleven persons have succumbed to death because of dengue fever, rat fever, jaundice, malaria and the number is still on rise in various parts of the district. But it seems that the authorities are still asleep at wheels.

M A Anil Kumar, Councillor, Ilamakkara is of the opinion that the authorities have not taken any measures to remove the waste that has been strewn all around. It has become a grazing field for the stray dogs and rats. ?People are still throwing away the waste,? he said. ?The rain has stopped. No measures are being taken to clean the stinking drainage. Kochi city is stinking. Diseases cannot be prevented unless measures are taken,? he said.

Three persons, who were reportedly undergoing treatment for leptospirosis (rat fever) at the Government Medical College Hospital here, died on Friday. The deceased are Kaniyarakkal Radha, 68, of West Hill, Kozhikode; Thekkechalil Madhavi, 64, of Koorachundu, Kozhikode; and Padiyath Kurumba, 65, of Vettam, Tirur, Malappuram district.

District Medical Officer (DMO) P.K. Mohanan told The Hindu that all three were undergoing treatment for suspected cases of leptospirosis. Their blood samples had been sent for confirmation tests. ?The cause of death can only be confirmed after receiving the test results,? he said.

KOCHI: The number of fever cases is on the rise in Ernakulam district. On Friday 602 fever cases were reported. Three rat fever cases have been confirmed each in Cheranalloor, Kochi Corporation area and Kanjur respectively. Three suspected rat fever cases have been reported in Vadavucode, Kochi Corporation and Tripunithura. Two are suspected to suffer from dengue, one in Paravur and the other in Kunnukara.

Fever deaths double in district

KOCHI: The total number of fever deaths reported in the district this year has more than doubled from last year. While a total of 8 cases were reported in 2010, the number has so far reached 20 this year. The increase is mainly owing to the diseases including leptospirosis (rat fever), hepatitis, malaria and dengue. But. the total number of fever cases has reduced by more than 40 per cent.

�As of October 31, 2010 the number of fever cases reported in the district was 2,28,734. In the same period this year, the number has gone down to 1,34,536.

Special team to visit rat fever affected areas

MALAPPURAM: In the wake of reports of rising cases of leptospirosis (rat fever) in various parts of the district, State Prevention of Epidemics and infection Disease Control Cell (SPEIDCC) will conduct a visit at various parts of district.

With the support of Kozhikode medical college, the team will conduct a detailed study and collect samples from the district.

According to the district health administration, the team will visit the disease prone areas of Vandoor, Chungathara and Edavanna. As per statistics, 70 cases of rat fever have been reported in the district. A total of 370 people have been admitted at various hospitals in district with symptoms of rat fever.
