More fever patients report at OP clinics

14 dengue, two leptospirosis cases confirmed in district

Fever patients continue to crowd the out-patient (OP) clinics in the district, with 1,418 new patients reporting at various hospitals on Wednesday.

The new fever OP cases on Tuesday were much lower, at 1,097.

Seventeen new suspected dengue cases and 14 confirmed cases of dengue were reported on Wednesday. Two cases of leptospirosis were confirmed from Malayam and Kannanthura.

MALAPPURAM: Dengue and rat fever cases in the district have doubled compared to last year, said district health administration officials at the review meeting organized to chalk out ways to prevent the outbreak of monsoon-related diseases.

District medical officer M Sakeena said the number of jaundice cases had gone up in Omanoor, Vazhakkad, Vazhayoor, Morayur, Kuttippuram and Vettam panchayats. Three cases of death due to jaundice were also reported this month in which over 500 cases were reported. Rat fever cases have been reported from the hilly regions near Nilambur, Chungathara and Vandur, the DMO said.

District medical officer P K Mohanan informed the minister that a total of 18.53 lakh people had approached government health institutions in the district for treatment this year.

Of this, 47,799 were viral fever cases. There were six dengue fever cases also. A total of 545 hepatitis, 70 leptospirosis cases have been reported in the district so far. There were four leptospirosis deaths in the district. Apart from this, 63 malaria, 50 H1N1 and six cholera cases had been reported from various parts of the district so far, informed the DMO. The cholera is confirmed in persons who had gone for picnic outside Kerala.

17 dengue cases in district

The public as well as the doctors should inform the Health Department as soon as any infectious diseases are confirmed, District Medical Officer T. Peethambaran has said.

Seventeen confirmed cases of dengue fever were reported in the district on Wednesday. New fever cases in the outpatient clinics went up slightly on Wednesday, with various public sector hospitals reporting 1,576 patients.

Thiruvananthapuram: With Kerala assembly Speaker G. Karthikeyan too down with fever, which seems to be assuming gigantic proportions, the government has moved to ensure more than adequate supply of medicines and presence of medical professionals in state-run hospitals.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told the state assembly Thursday that all measures are being taken to tackle the spread of fever across the state.
