THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The district health authorities have issued a dengue and malaria alert in the coastal belt following the detection of nine malaria cases in Vizhinjam.
Though no dengue cases have been reported from this area, the health administration has issued an alert since during the same period last year there was a sporadic increase in dengue cases. Since the coastal area is more prone to vector-borne diseases, the health administration has launched a host of measures to prevent any kind of spreading of such diseases.
"We are taking only the precautionary measures. There is no panic at present. Since the area is very sensitive and in the same period last year more cases of dengue and malaria were reported, we have launched an intensive campaign this time," said Dr N Sreedhar, District Medical Officer.
The nine cases of malaria reported from Vizhinjam are being carefully monitored by the district health administration.
