Kenya: Viral Disease Kills 3,000 Ruiru Sheep

MWALIMU herders from Gatong'ora ward are counting their losses after a disease wiped out more than 3,000 sheep within a month.
Speaking during a meeting on Saturday, the residents of Ruiru subcounty said that the disease is incurable. "Last week, I was losing 25 sheep every day, which is really painful," said farmer Mungai ole Maya, who has lost two-thirds of his 600- head flock.
Mungai said that he brought Martin Karani, a veterinarian from Kabete, to carried out blood tests. Karani identified the disease as pestes des petitis ruminants, a viral disease linked with rinderpest virus in cattle. He said the only way to prevent it is by vaccination...
