Kenya - Over 200 rushed to Meru hospital after consuming meat from sick cow

Over 200 residents of Karandine Village in Imenti South, Meru County have been rushed to hospital after consuming meat suspected to be from a cow infected with anthrax.

The residents were taken to Kanyakine Level Four Hospital where 40 of them were admitted as other people continue to be ferried to the hospital from the village.

The incident comes barely two weeks after one person died while three others were admitted at the Kapsabet County Referral Hospital after they suffered suspected food poisoning at Kipchabo Village, Nandi County.

The victims, who were all from one family, are suspected to have taken some food presumed to have been contaminated.

The family members suffered excruciating pain late in the night followed by diarrhoea and vomiting of blood.

Police in Meru County yet to arrest man who sold meat from sick cow

The farmer suspected to have sold uninspected meat in Meru County leading to the hospitalisation of more than 300 people is yet to be arrested.

On Sunday, tens of residents were rushed to Kanyakine Sub-County Hospital after consuming meat from the cow that had died of an unknown disease.

Meru Director of Livestock David Mugambi said the cow?s owner had sought the services of a quack veterinary officer to treat the animal before it died.

Mr Mugambi, however, refuted earlier reports that the cow was suffering from anthrax.

Speaking to Nation.co.ke on Monday, Meru Chief Officer of Health James Gitonga said 49 people were still admitted in hospital but were in stable condition while 262 others were treated and discharged on Saturday and Sunday.

Mr Gitonga said it was yet to be established what caused people to fall sick after consuming the meat.

?The cow was not suffering from anthrax as it has been reported in a section of the media.

?We suspect that the people were affected by antibiotics that were used to treat the sick animal.

?Meat from an animal treated with antibiotics should only be consumed after 28 days,? Mr Mugambi said.

300 Meru food poisoning victims discharged from hospital

The 147 males, 134 females and 19 children were receiving medical treatment at Kanyekine Sub-County Hospital following the food poisoning incident that took place over the weekend.

Another 53 patients were admitted on Monday, but at dawn 15 of them were discharged while 38 others remain admitted at the same hospital.

The infected beef was traced back to Japhat Muthomi who is said to have slaughtered the sick cow after advice from a quack veterinarian.

Dispelling residents? fears, Imenti South Medical Officer, Kepha Chui, said the cow was not infected by anthrax and clarified that residents who had consumed the meat were suffering from food poisoning.
