FORT MITCHELL, Ky. Northern Kentucky is on course to surpass the number of whooping cough cases reported in the region over the last six years.

The region's district health director, Dr. Steven R. Katkowsky, says 20 cases were reported since January, putting the region on pace to have more than 100 cases this year. Katkowsky says more than half the cases were in children 1 year old or younger.

Northern Kentucky averaged 25 cases of whooping cough, also called pertussis, from 2003-2009.

Katkowsky is recommending that parents of young children make sure that their child has been vaccinated for whooping cough.
