Immunization averts pneumonia outbreak

Interior Health is crediting an outreach immunization program for preventing a pneumonia outbreak on Kelowna streets.
Dr. Rob Parker says in the fall of last year 229 people were immunized through the Outreach Urban Health Clinic - a program that targets Kelowna's street population.
Parker says they were trying to head off an outbreak of a new strain of pneumonia.
"The immunization clearly works, especially for this population that is so at risk because it might be dealing with other health issues like malnutrition, some people might be HIV positive, it probably prevented 20 to 30 excess cases over the winter."
Parker says the pnuemococcal immunization program is now part of their routine immunization plan.
