</TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=2></TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=2></TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=2>Oct. 17--The state's first weekly report on student absenteeism caused by illness found that nearly 20 percent of the elementary schools and 25 percent of middle schools and high schools had 10 percent or more of their students absent during the week ending Oct. 9.
The information was included in the Kansas Department of Health and Environment's weekly influenza report.
In south-central Kansas, 14 percent of the elementary schools had 10 percent or higher absenteeism. Elementary school absenteeism was highest in northwest Kansas, where 32 percent of the schools had 10 percent or higher absenteeism, and in southeast Kansas (31 percent). In Reno County, fewer than 10 percent of the elementary schools hit the threshold.
Twenty-seven percent of the middle schools in south-central Kansas had a 10 percent or higher absenteeism rate, compared with a high of 38 percent of the schools in southeast Kansas and a low of 6 percent of the schools in northwest Kansas. Reno County fell into a wide-ranging category in which 10 to 49 percent of the middle schools met the threshold.
South-central Kansas had 26 percent of its high schools at the threshold or higher. Four other regions had 30 percent or more of their schools reporting high absenteeism -- the north-central (30 percent), the southwest and northwest (31 percent) and the southeast (40 percent). Fewer than 10 percent of Reno County's high schools were at the threshold.
KDHE began gathering data on absenteeism related to illnesses last week through county health departments.
