Kazakhstan has recorded its first case of polio since 1995 - a wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) case close to the border with Uzbekistan. While Uzbekistan is yet to confirm any cases, the risk of transmission in Uzbekistan must be considered to be high.

Kazakhstan has reported its first case since 1995 this week: a seven-year-old boy living in Saryagach, South Kazakhstan - close to the border with Uzbekistan - suffered onset of paralysis from WPV1 on 12 August. This case has already been covered by one SIA, with 1,668,727 children immunized with tOPV from 6-10 September. An emergency response plan to the case is currently being developed.
