Srinagar Aug 8: The Animal Husbandry Department, Kashmir is shortly organizing mock drills to check its preparedness for control and containment of the dreaded ?Bird Flu? disease.

The department has organized a series of training camps and by now almost entire staff of the department is trained in control and containment operations including culling and vaccination of birds.

This was stated at a high level review meeting taken by Sheikh Nissar Ahmad, Secretary to Government Animal/Sheep Husbandry Department, at the Institute of Animal Health &Biological Products, Zakura. The department has been maintaining a strict vigilance in the entire state. As against a target of 1600 samples of different body fluids of the poultry population in Kashmir Division for the first quarter of this year, the department procured 2172, of which 341 were dispatched to High Security Animal Disease Laboratory, Bhopal and remaining 1831 samples were sent to Regional Disease Diagnostic Lab, Jallandhar. The department has procured 2109 special Personnel Protective Equipments for the Rapid Response Teams and many more are in pipeline.

According to Dr SP Sharma, Director, Animal Husbandry Kashmir the department has procured disinfectants and other chemicals at the rate of Rs 45000 for each district besides a number of foggers, Ice gel packs for cold chain maintenance. The department has already nominated a nodal officer for each division who will be coordinating operations in case of emergencies. Control rooms are already in place in each division and district, added Dr Sharma. He said that as part of its monitoring and surveillance programme the department is maintaining a strict vigil at Lakhanpur and Zig Qazi-Gund on the poultry entering the state and Kashmir Division respectively. Sheikh Nissar Ahmad asked the AHD authorities to organize mock drills to check the preparedness for control and containment of an outbreak. It was decided to organize such drills in each district in coming weeks. It was decided to arrange sufficient number of Carbon Dioxide cylinders and poly bags for humane culling operations keeping in view the local ethos.
