Six suspected malaria deaths in Hospet taluk

BELLARY: Six persons, including an eight-year-old girl, have died in the past three days of suspected malaria. The deaths have occurred at Bhuvanahalli and Gadiganur in Hospet taluk of Bellary district.

As many as five people have died at Bhuvanahalli. They have been identified as Nayakara Venkappa (45) who passed away on Monday, Thippamma (8) and Giddappa (45), who died on Sunday, and Dyavamma (24) and Honnurswamy (30) who died on Saturday. The one victim from Gadiganur has been identified as T. Nagappa.

BELLARY: Four persons, including a girl, died of malaria and jaundice in Bhuvanahalli village of Hospet taluk on Sunday night. The deceased have been identified as Thipamma Mangali (8), Matyamma (21), Honnur Swamy (20) and Gidappa (40).

More than 50 persons have been suffering from fever in Kodiganahalli, Gadiaganuru and Bhuvanahalli villages. They are all being treated at VIMS Hospital. Tahsildar Manjunath has appealed to the people of the three villages to drink boiled water.

Speaking to 'The Times of India', taluk health officer Jambiah confirmed that the death of four persons was due to malaria and jaundice. "We are awaiting lab reports to know the cause of two other deaths," he added.

As a precautionary measure, taluk-level doctors have camped at Bhuvanahalli village. Meanwhile, the villagers charged the Water Board with not purifying the water before supplying the same through taps.

Thirteen people from Bhuvanahalli have tested positive for leptospirosis


Bellary: In the past week, 13 deaths have been reported in villages covered by Gadiganur Public Health Centre and more number of deaths have occurred in Bhuvanahalli village of Hospet taluk. However, District Health Officer Srikant Basur has put the number of deaths to 10.

As many as 126 out of the total 1,973 blood smears collected since October 18 to Friday noon at Gadiganur Public Health Centre have tested positive. Of the cases that have tested positive, 65 have tested positive for plasmodium falciparum and 60 for vivax and one case was a mix of both. They are all being treated in hospital. Besides that, 1,871 cases have been treated as outpatients, Mr. Basur said adding that the situation was now under control.

Leptospirosis cases

Meanwhile, 13 blood samples that were collected in Bhuvanahalli and sent to National Centre for Disease Control Bangalore, have tested positive for leptospirosis. Around 500 cases of malaria have been reported from Kuditini village in Bellary taluk, several cases in Hale Daroji, Kampli and other villages.

As many as 24 patients have been admitted at VIMS hospital in Bellary.

The death toll due to malaria in the last nine days in Bellary district has risen to 16, with one more person succumbing to the ailment today, official sources said.


The deceased, who was suffering from malaria for the past over one week, died at his residence here, they said.The man was being treated for the fever at VIMS hospital and was yet to recover fully, but was discharged on the request of his family members, doctors at VIMS said.

Over 70 malaria patients are being treated at VIMS Hospital.Even as district authorities have taken up measures like fogging and spraying and claim to have adequate stock of medicines, health officers who did not wish to be named said dearth of medicines was the main reason for the increasing number of cases.

Blood samples of all malaria patients in the district are being sent to National Institute of Communicable Diseases, Bangalore for testing, health officials said.

22 deaths reported since malaria broke out in Hospet taluk

BELLARY: G. Janardhan Reddy, Minister for Tourism and district in-charge, while claiming that malaria, which has broken out in several villages in Hospet taluk, was under control, said that only 14 deaths had occurred due to the disease.
Responding to presspersons' questions after the Rajyotsava celebrations here on Monday, Mr. Reddy said that only 14 people had died due to malaria in some villages of Hospet taluk. Others had died due to different diseases, he added.

According to official sources, 22 persons have died in Hospet taluk since malaria broke out there. The number of deaths was more in Bhuvanahalli and Gadiganur villages.

A few people in the same taluk had died due to dengue and other diseases. Unhygienic conditions and alleged laxity on the part of health workers are stated to be the prominent reasons for the outbreak of the epidemic.

9,278 samples sent for blood test
Bangalore, November 6, DHNS:

As many as 9,278 samples of blood have been sent for laboratory test in the villages coming under the purview of Gadiganur primary health centre in Bellary district.


Of these, 354 malaria PV and 406 malaria PF have been detected, according to a press note by E Ramana Reddy, Secretary, Health Department.

He said so far five patients had died due to malaria. The Government has sanctioned Rs 15 lakh to purchase the required medicines for patients. The situation is under control, he added.

Death toll rises to 25

With two more women succumbing to the epidemic in Bhuvanahalli of Hospet taluk the death toll has risen to 25.

Rukuminamma (25) of Gadiganur died on Friday while Kanti Bharamavva (65) succumbed to the fever on Saturday evening.

Bellary (Kar), Nov 8 (PTI) The death toll in Karnataka's Bellary district due to malaria and dengue has risen to 28 in the last three weeks with the death of two more persons today, officials said.

The deceased were a 60-year-old woman and a 12-year-old boy, both from the worst-affected Bhuvanahalli village, they said.
