Brothers succumb to leptospirosis

MANGALORE: Two youths including a teenager from Pararai area of B Muda village under Panjikallu health centre jurisdiction in Bantwal taluk have succumbed to leptospirosis (rat fever) since August 16. While Deepak, 22, elder son of Seetharam Poojary succumbed to the disease on August 16, his younger son Praveen, 17, died on Monday, district health and family welfare officer OR Srirangappa stated here.

Ayurveda doctor dies of leptospirosis

Dr. Akthar had fever 10 days ago and was diagnosed with viral fever

Sajid Akthar, 30, an ayurveda doctor from Chikmagalur who was practising in a clinic in the city, died of leptospirosis (rat fever) in a city hospital on Monday. This takes the number of deaths from leptospirosis to three.

Coastal Karnataka is in the grip of rat fever. Dr O R Srirangappa, family welfare officer for Dakshina Kannada said, ?Seventy cases of rat fever have been reported in the Dakshina Kannada district. Two brothers from Bantwal taluk succumbed to the disease. Besides, there have been three to four suspected deaths, which are being verified."

According to sources, an ayurvedic doctor from Chikmagalur is said to have died due to rat fever at a private hospital in Mangalore.

Doctors fear worse if the outbreak is not contained. ?Last year, more than 200 cases of rat fever were reported. The detection rate was better last year as the district was chosen under a pilot project. This year, the disease has made a ?comeback?, with strains of the bacteria picking up pace. It is common in high rainfall areas like Mangalore, Udupi and Uttara Kannada,? said a doctor.
