[h=1]H1N1 scare in Mysuru[/h]
Just days after the fear of H5N8 (Bird Flu) in Mysuru City was reported, H1N1 (Swine Flu) has reared its ugly head across the district. Just in one month since New Year, hospitals in the city have witnessed 27 suspected cases with 8 samples testing positive for H1N1.

Of eight cases, four patients have been cured and discharged from hospital and another four are still being treated in hospitals across the city. Of 27 cases, Mysuru urban has recorded 17 cases while taluks in the district have shared 10 cases.

Speaking to Bangalore Mirror, Dr B Basavaraju, district health officer, said, ?There have been more cases this year. But the public need not worry as we have sufficient medicines to treat them. But they ought not to neglect symptoms of fever.?

Some experts said that although Mysuru city had more cases, people had nothing to worry about. Cities have greater populations and hence the spread of the flu is faster.

[h=1]H1N1 is back, with three deaths till date[/h]
The city is witnessing a significant rise in the number of Swine Flu (H1N1) influenza cases. Doctors across the city have still not pressed the panic button, but a large number of cases in two consecutive months have become a cause of concern and data predicts that the worst is yet to come for 2017.

According to data released by the department of health and family welfare, there was not a single influenza death in 2016, but this year in two months there have been three till February 21. Also, the number of patients testing positive has gone up.

Dr Murali Mohan BV, senior pulmonologist in the city, said, ?We have seen similar traits in other bacterial and viral infections, but there is no study to corroborate the facts about H1N1 striking back in cycle with an increase in number of patients each consecutive year. But it is not a surprise as the virus also evolves co-terminus with the immunity of the population exposed to it.?

[h=1]H1N1 toll mounts: Three in three days[/h]
The state has witnessed three deaths due to the impact of Influenza-A H1N1 (swine flu) in just three days, spiking up the death toll from seven to ten.

The latest swine flu deaths have been reported from Ballari, Belagavi and Uttara Kannada on three consecutive days of March 22, 23 and 24 respectively according to the latest data available with the State Family Welfare department.

Doctors from the city said that the virus has evolved and there is a slight change that is called an antigenic drift and this is a continuous process. These genetic changes produce viruses that replicate the old one but has a new strain and hence the old vaccine that is pretty much effective against the H1N1 virus can?t be as effective against the new strain and hence will need an upgradation.

[h=1]H1N1 cases see alarming rise this year; 10 deaths in 3 months[/h]
Over 1,000 cases of H1N1 have been reported in the state in a span of just one month. In all, 1,600 cases of the flu have been reported this year so far.

A total of 110 cases of the flu were reported in 2016. While no deaths were reported last year, in a span of just three months in 2017, H1N1 has claimed 10 lives as per figures available with the department of health and family welfare.

Dr Shashidhar Buggi, director, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases (RGICD), said the figures were very high this year. Usually, the disease is prevalent between October and January. But this year, there has been a spurt in February and March.

?It will not be similar to the pandemic witnessed in 2009. A certain population has developed immunity towards the disease. However, the immunity lasts only for a period of time. Should the virus mutate or change its virulence, there are chances that people get affected,? said Buggi.

This year, it is the adults who are worst affected. ?Earlier, we would see youngsters being susceptible. This year, it is mostly those who have crossed 40 years who were affected. This could be attributed to co-morbid conditions such as malnutrition, diabetes or other non-communicable diseases. Those on steroids or chemotherapy are more susceptible,? he said. Buggi advised that those susceptible to the flu, for whom it lasts for over two days, could take Oseltamivir medicine.
