Nine positive cases of KFD disease detected

Shimoga, Feb 10 (PTI): Nine persons have tested positive for 'Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD), known as Monkey disease in Theerthahlli taluk in the past 15 days a top district official said here today. Kyasanur Forest Disease is a tick-borne viral hemorrhagic fever endemic to South Asia. The disease is caused by a virus belonging to the family flaviviridae, which also includes yellow fever and dengue fever. "Nine of the 89 samples sent to virus testing laboratory in Bangalore tested positive," Shimoga Zilla Parishad CEO Sanjay Bijjur told reporters after a review meeting with health officials here today.

KFD claims 1 life in Tirthahalli

SHIMOGA: Department of Health and Family Welfare of Shimoga confirmed the death of one person of Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD) in Konandur hobli of Tirthahalli taluk on January 17. District Health and Family Welfare officer Dr Channabasappa told Express that of the 30 blood smears tested in December 2011 and January 2012, six samples confirmed KFD.
Shekharappa (65) died due KFD and the remaining five cases were recovering.

SHIMOGA: Eight more persons have tested positive for Monkey disease also called Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD). Of the 89 blood samples sent for tests, eight returned positive, said Sanjay Bijur, CEO of Shimoga ZP.

The ZP CEO said that he has directed medical staff to complete inoculation of all villagers by February 14, at the three primary health divisions covering Konandur, Hombuja and Rippenpet in the taluk.

Problem of monkey fever refuses to go away in Shimoga

Government under pressure to modernise the testing lab
As Kyasanur Forest Disease, popularly known as monkey fever, has created havoc on Tirthahalli and Hosanagar taluks in the district this year, people in the affected region have demanded the Government to avoid releasing monkeys captured in urban areas into the forest, and to modernise the Viral Diagnostic Laboratory in the district at the earliest.

The monkey fever is a transmitted through the ticks from monkeys to human beings.

The Viral Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) in the city is receiving blood samples of suspected cases daily. As many as 176 blood samples of suspected cases were subjected to test at VDL in 2012 of which 38 blood samples were tested positive.

Sources in the Department of Health and Family Welfare have said that of the 37 tick samples collected in the district this year so far, 13 tested positive.

Exorbitant price paid for KFD medicines

BANGALORE: Officials of the Viral Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL) allegedly purchased nutrient supplements and medicines for the Kyasanur Forest Disease (KFD) or monkey fever victims in Shimoga at a price much higher than the market rate.

Transmitted through the ticks from monkeys to human beings, KFD was detected in several parts of Tirthahalli and Hosanagar taluks in Shimoga district, ?Extensive vaccination have been undertaken in the KFD prone areas , sufficient medicines were made available and lot of awareness activities were conducted,? she said. This year nearly 285 blood samples were received by the district authorities and over 69 cases were found positive including 64 in Tirthahalli and five in Hosanagar taluk. In Tirthahalli, one person died and sample reports revealed 13 monkeys had KFD. In Hosanagar six monkeys died and two were found KFD positive.

The lesser-known monkey fever has swept across the Malnad region. According to the health department, 70 cases of monkey fever have been reported from Shimoga, Chikmagalur and parts of Uttara Kannada. ?The disease, also known as Kyasanur Forest Disease, is specific only to this area.
