Swine flu wipes out adults in their prime

The H1N1 virus seems to have slowly but steadily made its way into the state, with the deaths toll since January this year standing as 12. Adults, particularly young to middling adults, are more prone to it. All the 12 deaths were in the age group of 22-45 years, and of the 217 positive cases registered with the State Health and Family Welfare Department, about 90 per cent belong to this age group, says Dr Aruna, joint director, communicable diseases, health and family welfare department.

28-yr-old woman succumbs to H1N1

Davanagere: A 28-year-old woman from Myduru village in Davanagere district died due to H1N1. Three other women from Davanagere city have also been found suffering from H1N1, said district surveillance officer Dr Saroja Bayi. Overall in the last month, two patients died after suffering from H1N1.

The latest prey to H1N1 virus died on May 2 at Bapuji hospital, where she was receiving her treatment, in Davanagere. On May 5 the swab results of the victim, which were sent to NIMHANS, Bangalore, confirmed that she was suffering from H1N1, said Bayi. Saroja Bayi said that the other three women, aged 28, 30 and 36 years respectively, are receiving treatment at a hospital and are residents of Cheluvadikeri and police quarters of Davanagere city.

Drugs available Meanwhile, swab tests of three more patient's has been sent to NIMHANS to confirm about the virus, Bayi said. Suitable drugs along with masks have been provided to the family members of the patients and also for the residents of the area of their residence, Saroja Bayi added.

Two women die of A(H1N1) in Davangere

Two women died of A(H1N1) disease in the past few days, while six more cases have been confirmed in the district.

District Health Officer Sumitra Devi told mediapersons here on Saturday that throat swabs of more than 15 persons had been sent to Bangalore for testing, of which six were found to be positive.

Woman dies of H1N1

A woman succumbed to H1N1 at Chottanahalli in Maddur district recently. The dead has been identified as Eshwari (45).

Eshwari contracted fever when she was in Bangalore on a visit. On returning to the village, she got admitted to a hospital in Besagarahalli, as the fever did not subside.Later, she was taken to S D Jayaram Hospital in Mandya.

As she failed to respond to the treatment, she was admitted to JSS Hospital in Mysore.
With the treatment failing, she died on May 10.

Pathological tests confirmed the presence of H1N1 virus.

Man dies of H1N1 in Gadag

A 44-year-old man died of H1N1 influenza here on June 3.

Rasool Sab had been suffering from pneumonia and was admitted to a private hospital on May 31.

His throat swab samples were sent to Nimhans in Bangalore for testing and H1N1 infection was confirmed.

By this time, the patient had gone into coma and the treatment failed.
District health officer D B Channashetty said that tests had been conducted on all employees of the factory where Rasool Sab was working.

Precautionary measures have been taken to prevent the spread of the disease in the village.

Dengue, H1N1 kill two

Dengue and H1N1 have claimed a life each in the two districts. Vishwanath (12), died of suspected dengue fever in Davangere on Tuesday while his nine-year-old sister Sowmya has been hospitalised in critical state.

A farmer of Kalkere village, Holalkere taluk in Chitradurga district has succumbed to H1N1.

According to Dr Ranganath, district nodal officer, the farmer developed the symptoms of the influenza after his return from a trip to Bangalore.

As many as 320 people have lost their lives in the State since May 2009 after the outbreak of the flu.

CHITRADURGA: A farmer from Kalkere, coming under Dummi GP in Holalkere taluk, died of H1N1 on June 10. This is the second epidemic-related case to be recorded in the district within a month: another farmer from Bahaddurghatta of Chitradurga taluk had succumbed to the disease on May 17.

They were admitted to Manipal Hospital in Bangalore for treatment, but did not respond to treatment, and died there, said district nodal officer Dr Ranganath on Wednesday.

The farmer from Bahaddurghatta was treated locally for cold, cough and fever before being shifted to Manipal Hospital. He was diagnosed to be inflicted with H1N1 in Bangalore, said Dr Mahalingappa, in charge district health and family welfare officer.

The 58-year-old farmer from Kalkere had been to Bangalore for the betrothal ceremony of his daughter a fortnight ago. He too was treated for cold and cough locally. But in Manipal Hospital, it was found to be H1N1.

BANGALORE: The dreaded swine flu or influenza1 (H1N1) has silently resurfaced in the state. But there is no need to panic as the virus is not as aggressive as it was when it first surfaced in India during 2009, say doctors.

Of the 346 people who tested positive, 28 died in the first half of 2012. The figures may not be alarming but still sound a warning because the state has registered almost 100% more deaths than in 2011. Karnataka had lost 16 people to H1N1 last year, said the sources in the Department of health and family welfare.

Belgaum prisoner contracts swine flu

A prisoner lodged in Hindalaga Central Prison in Belgaum has been diagnosed with swine flu. Although he is out of danger, hospital authorities suspect some more inmates might have been affected with the H1N1 virus.

The 55-year-old prisoner, Ashok Bandeppa Keri, is serving life term for a murder case and has been in the jail for the past 10 years. Veerabhadra Swamy, deputy inspector general of prison, said Keri was admitted to Belgaum district government hospital a month ago after he complained of bronchitis and asthma. He was first treated in the jail hospital and then shifted to the district hospital, where he was diagnosed with H1N1.

Swamy said jail authorities were of the view that Keri did not contract swine flu in the jail. Sources in the jail said Keri was taken to district hospital a month ago too and that is where the H1N1 virus must have infected him. There is apprehension that a few other inmates too are infected with swine flu. Twelve other inmates were admitted in the hospital after complaining of vomiting and diarrhoea.

Girl dies of influenza

A 10-year-old girl from Mulbagal taluk of Kolar district died of influenza at a hospital in Bangalore on Thursday. Rakshita, a resident of Kenchanahalli under Uttanur gram panchayat limits, received medical treatment at Mudiyanur and Srinivaspur hospitals before being shifted to Banglore. State sees rise in H1N1 cases

Though the spread of the H1N1 influenza seemed to have abated in the State, the last few days, however, have seen a rise in the number of H1N1 positive cases. According to statistics from the State Health and Family Welfare Department, on Thursday, out of the 22 suspected cases sent for testing, four postive cases of H1N1 have been reported from NIMHANS Virology Laboratory.

Since January till date, 636 H1N1 positive cases and 34 deaths due to the disease have been registered with the State Health Department. Of the 636 positve cases, 380 are reported from BBMP areas and of the 34 deaths, four are from BBMP limits?.

However, the Department is taking all possible measures to contain the disease and we are conducting awareness programme regularly. In addition, the Tamiflu tablets are now made available at all government-run hospitals?.

Pregnant woman diagnosed with H1N1

BANGALORE: A pregnant woman Nalini, 24, from Hoskote, is suffering from Influenza A (H1N1) and has been admitted to a city hospital.

The mother of one child was admitted to Narayana Super Specialty Hospital, Malleswaram with symptoms of pneumonia on September 29. The hospital sent her blood samples to Lalpath Laboratory, New Delhi, which confirmed she is suffering from H1N1.

"The patient is in a critical condition and we have put her on a ventilator. The case is more complicated because she is pregnant," said Dr V Narayanaswamy, CEO of the hospital.

H1N1 back with a bigger sting

BANGALORE: 'Herd immunity' to swine flu, developed over the past couple of years, appears to be diminishing in Karnataka.

The department of communicable diseases recorded a 300% spike in the number of deaths due to Influenza A or H1N1 in the state in 2012, compared to 2011. The virus which killed 255 people during 2009-2010, claimed 16 lives in 2011, but in 11 months of 2012, has already claimed 44 lives in Karnataka, including eight in Bangalore.

The state recorded 810 positive cases of H1N1 since January 1 this year, confirmed health and family welfare department officials. The feared dengue, by comparison, claimed 21 lives in the state this year, including four in Bangalore.

Experts blame this sudden resurgence of H1N1 on decreasing immunity to the virus in people, especially the migrant population. Dr H Sudarshan Ballal, medical director, Manipal Hospitals, said: "There is a possibility that the virus has not completely mutated. It can still be deadly for a person with low immunity or someone who has migrated to a new place and is not vaccinated against H1N1. The virus is less aggressive compared to 2009, when it first appeared, but has the capacity to resurface and attack a person with low immunity."

Manipal Hospitals recorded six deaths due to 'suspected H1N1' this year and the number of positive cases was much higher compared to last year, he added.

Dr Shashidhar Buggi, medical director, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases, confirmed that H1N1 cases were much higher this year compared to last year. "Our institute registered 114 H1N1 positive cases this year, while only 18 cases were recorded last year. Six people died due to the virus in our institute this year, while there were no deaths due to H1N1 last year," he said.

Doctors, however, feel Influenza A need not be fatal by itself, in all instances. The virus could prove lethal if the patient suffers from co-morbid conditions like diabetes, pneumonia and cardiovascular complications.

"Co-morbid conditions are crucial in deciding H1N1 fatalities. We've seen young patients with no other communicable or non-communicable disease responding fairly well to treatment, compared to middle-aged or old patients with co-morbid conditions," said Dr Shivprasad C, consultant physician and intensivist, Narayana Hrudayalaya.
