All but five of the 28 positives found this year involved rabies in a skunk, the animal most associated with carrying the virus in Kansas. The K-State lab found three cases in cats, one in a bovine and one in a fox.

A Kansas State University laboratory that verifies suspected cases of rabies in Kansas reports a spike of nearly three times the number of positive infections found this year compared to the same time period in 2014.
Rolan Davis, a diagnostician in the Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, said the facility had positively established 28 rabies cases from January through March this year. There were only 10 such positives confirmed during the same three months a year ago, Davis reported in a news release Monday...
...Davis said the increase is not a cause for alarm, but should raise awareness among pet owners...
