Local veterinarians warn of deadly virus spreading among Wichita cats

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) – Local veterinarians are on alert after at least 15 cats in the Wichita area have died from a highly contagious virus.

"It is abnormal to see how many cases we've been seeing in kind of a cluster in this area,” Fischer said. "We're not only seeing it in teenage-type cats, but also older cats, which is pretty unusual."
Fischer says more people are reaching out for help as vets are busy trying to treat more cats, but in all 15 cases the clinic has seen, the cat has died.
"Unfortunately, panleukopenia does have a pretty high mortality rate even with treatment," she said.
Fischer says cats need to be vaccinated, outdoor cats should be kept inside right now, and new cats should be quarantined away from other animals for at least two weeks.
