Riley County confirms sixth coronavirus case, addresses rumors

RILEY COUNTY, Kan. (WIBW) - The Riley County Health Department has confirmed they were notified of sixth positive coronavirus case Wednesday afternoon, this individual was tested at the swabbing station in Riley County on Tuesday.

The sixth individual has been isolated at their home more information be released once close contacts and contact tracing has been determined.

Riley County health officials say they have been addressing many rumors about the number of cases within the county.

Health officials stress, do not believe everything you see on-line and on social media, unless you have verified the source of the information.

“We have seen many rumors out there, if you see someone making a claim on social media that doesn’t sound valid, don’t be afraid to question them, or if you have it, provide the accurate information.” Riley County Health Department, local health officer and director, Julie Gibbs says.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Riley County is currently monitoring 23 people and they are awaiting the results of 12 more tests, which includes tests pending at Fort Riley as well.

Violating county health order now added to list of enforceable codes in Emporia

A new ordinance passed by the Emporia City Commission will add violation of a public health order to the list of enforceable city codes.

Commissioners passed the ordinance 3-2 Wednesday afternoon. The ordinance allows the Emporia Police Department to enforce any Lyon County Public Health order any time one is active.

Commissioner John Geitz and Mayor Danny Giefer both voted down the motion. Geitz explains it did not make sense to him for the city to allow enforcement only for the city regarding an order that is issued for the entire county.

Giefer says this was the same reasoning behind his decision and also says there have been several concerns expressed to him regarding the ordinance. He tells KVOE News the main concerns have been a fear of individuals having their constitutional rights violated by this new enforcement.

Interim Emporia Police Chief Ed Owens says the new enforcement efforts will not, in any way, infringe upon the rights of any citizen. He says the ordinance simply gives officers more flexibility to be able to maintain the health and safety of local residents during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Any violation would be a class c misdemeanor and would be punishable by a fine of up to $500, a jail term of up to one month or both. The new ordinance will officially go into effect after the expiration of Governor Laura Kelly's statewide stay-at-home order on Apr. 19 as the state-wide order currently supersedes any county order.

Saline County: 2 additional COVID-19 cases

Saline County issued the following statement Wednesday evening concerning additional confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 in the county.

The Saline County Health Department has been notified of two additional positive cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Saline County. The positive cases were identified through testing sent to a private lab and to the KDHE lab.

One case is a female in her 60’s. The other case is a male in his 60’s. These cases are not related. Both cases are not associated with known close contacts or travel to hot spot areas. Due to HIPAA, no other patient information will be released. Both individuals are under the care of medical staff at Salina Regional Health Center.

The Saline County Health Department is working to identify any close contacts of these individuals. Those that were exposed will be contacted by the Saline County Health Department as soon as possible.

Rural Kansas' Ambulance Crews Will Be Doubly Strained By Coronavirus

GARDEN CITY, Kansas — The Finney County Emergency Medical Service department, with its staff of 23, is conserving its N95 masks and only using them when a patient is positive for COVID-19. Like large hospitals, U.S. cities and entire European countries, rural EMS workers aren’t shielded from the medical supply shortage.

And that’s just one of the challenges rural EMS agencies across Kansas stare down as COVID-19 is being confirmed in their communities. They’re stretched thin, covering hundreds of miles, and seeing the ripple effects from the pandemic that’s shut down communities — something emergency plans hadn’t accounted for.

All of Kansas’ 105 counties have mutual aid agreements: If fire or EMS departments need backup, other counties step in to assist. Those may be the support that holds emergency services together in the coming months.

Riley County confirms eight positive cases of COVID-19

RILEY COUNTY, Kan. (WIBW) - Riley County Health officials have announced confirmation of two more cases of coronavirus, bringing the total in Riley County up to eight confirmed positives for COVID-19.

The two most recent cases are linked to travel, or close-contact to others who have traveled and tested positive for coronavirus.

The individuals are being treated at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan.

(RILEY COUNTY, KS – April 2, 2020) As of the 10:00 a.m. update, there are currently eight (8) positive cases of coronavirus in Riley County. Two (2) of those positive cases are being treated at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan. There are nine (9) tests pending and 28 people who are being monitored by the Riley County Health Department (RCHD). There have been 70 negative tests in the county so far.

The most recent positive cases are all travel associated. They are linked to travel outside the community or close contact to other people who have traveled and tested positive for COVID-19.

“The peak could happen around the end of April in Riley County and every action you take now will impact the health of the people around you,” said Local Health Officer Julie Gibbs. “This virus is deadly, and when you choose to stay home, you are choosing to save lives. I can’t emphasize this enough; we all need to do our part.”

A new mapping feature available through the Riley County Response Hub at www.rileycountyks.gov/coronavirus assigns a score on the Social Distancing Index to let residents know how well they are following guidelines. The data is compiled using travel data for each county. Riley County is currently scored as a B, indicating the community has reduced travel by 30-40%.

Shawnee Co. has 20 cases of COVID-19

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Shawnee County now has 20 cases of coronavirus, up two from yesterday. Those numbers come from the Shawnee County Department of Health's Coronavirus Community Impact Dashboard, which is available on their website.

Three people in the county have recovered from the virus, two have died,117 are being monitored and 33 are under investigation. Of those who have qualified for testing, 485 have tested negative.

Lyon Co. has 3 new cases of COVID-19

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- The Lyon County Health Department announced this afternoon that there are now 17 positive cases of the coronavirus in the county, up three from yesterday.

The majority of the positive cases in the county have no travel history, suggesting community transmission. The most common age rage for positive patients in the county is between 51 and 60 years old.

Coffey Co. has two new cases of COVID-19

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- The Coffey County Health Department announced today that there are two more positive cases of the coronavirus in the county. One is a 40-year-old female, the other is an 86-year-old male. Both are in isolation.

There are also 26 cases of the virus connected with the LifeCare Center in Burlington. This number includes faculty and residents. Some employees reside outside of Coffey County so they are counted in their home counties.

Sedgwick Co. detention deputy tests positive, another presumptive for COVID-19

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter says a detention deputy has tested positive for COVID-19 and another deputy is presumptive positive.

Sheriff Easter said the first deputy was tested two days ago and is now at home recovering.

The second deputy was not feeling well and showing symptoms. They went to the hospital and was told he was presumptive positive for COVID-19. That deputy is now awaiting results from a test their doctor.

"We have had anxiety in the sheriff's office since these two cases have arisen. It's the same as anxiety as citizens have it at home or at work. It's no different here," said Easter.

He said the sheriff's office emphasizes to deputies to wash their hands, not touch their faces and sanitize their workspace.

Easter said currently, no inmates have tested positive for coronavirus.

Third positive case of COVID-19 identified

The Barton County Health Department reports a third positive case of COVID-19.


Assistant County Administrator Donna Zimmerman said more information will be provided as it becomes available. “Please practice good hygiene by coughing into your sleeve, frequently washing your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds or more, disinfect high touch areas continually and practice social distancing by maintaining a 6-foot perimeter.”
