Kansas health officials confirm another Life Care Center coronavirus outbreak

At least eight people have contracted the novel coronavirus from an outbreak at a skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility in Burlington, a city of less than 3,000 in eastern Kansas.

The facility is owned by Life Care Center, the company that owns nursing homes linked to deaths in Seattle and Wyandotte County, according to Lee Norman, secretary of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

State health officials said they are studying how the outbreak in Burlington started.

KDHE Secretary Norman holds news conference about COVID-19

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) Secretary Dr. Lee Norman held this week's first news conference updating community members about the status of the coronavirus in the state. The meetings have been taking place each Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 1:30 p.m.

Norman began by giving the current number of coronavirus cases and deaths, 368 and eight respectively. The two newest deaths are a man in his 70s from Crawford County and a woman in her early 40s with significant underlying medical problems.

Norman also said there was an outbreak at Life Care Center in Burlington; coronavirus outbreaks have popped up in various nursing home facilities across the country, posing serious threat to elderly residents.

Norman expects the number of cases in the state will hit its peak around April 24, adding that the average carrier can spread the virus to nearly five people within three days. The average stay for a patient hospitalized with coronavirus is 10 days, or two weeks if the patient's condition is bad enough for them to be held in the Intensive Care Unit.

Dr. Norman also mentioned that it is still too early to tell if people who have recovered from the virus can get it again.

KDHE to begin new covid-19 testing method

KANSAS — Thousands of coronavirus tests are coming to Kansas.

Health officials are saying they will help provide a clearer picture for the state.

Scientists at the State Department of Health and Environment Labs will soon begin a new method of testing.

KDHE is planning on getting a new testing system installed by the end of the week.

It will provide quicker 45 minute tests, and with it, Kansas will receive 65,000 test kits.

KDHE Secretary Lee Norman says he would like to see the department running up to 1,000 tests each day.

The tests will help the department get a better grasp on how the disease is spreading and where it is lurking inside the population.

18 positive COVID-19 cases being reported at Kansas nursing home

BURLINGTON, Kan. – Eighteen people at a Kansas nursing home have tested positive for the coronavirus COVID-19, according to a spokesperson.

The executive director of the Life Care Center said they learned about the first case in Burlington, Kansas, located a little over an hour south of Topeka, last Thursday. Now 11 residents and seven staff members are sick.

KSNT-TV reports some of the residents are in the hospital and others are being isolated in the nursing home.

The state’s official numbers only show 10 cases in Coffey County where that facility is located. KDHE only updates their numbers once a day.

It is also unknown where those seven staff members live because the nursing home won’t release that information.

Hospitals in rural Kansas prepare for challenges as coronavirus cases increase

CLOUD COUNTY, Kan. (KWCH) Hospitals across the country are facing challenges while treating coronavirus patients: a limited amount of tests, personal protection equipment and bed space.

Out of the 105 counties in Kansas, 37 have confirmed cases of coronavirus. Those with no reports are mainly in rural parts of the state, but healthcare staff in those areas are still preparing for an influx of patients.

"We could be potentially looking at 935 people in our county needing to be hospitalized from this. There's no way we can handle those numbers," said Cloud County Health Officer Dorothy Breault.

Breault said the Cloud County Hospital currently has 25 beds and two ventilators.

"We're rural docs. We do inpatient, we do clinic, we do ER. A little bit of everything. But by no means are we critical care specialists who are used to dealing with ventilators on a day to day basis. So, it's really going to challenge us if we have to keep some of those really sick patients here on ventilators," she said.

Breault said the rural facilities transfer patients who need ventilators to larger facilities in Salina or Wichita. But, since they could also see an increase in patients, they might not be possible.

Kansas health providers face financial strain from COVID-19. ‘We need help now’

A pandemic is sweeping Kansas, but Lawrence family physician Chad Johanning isn’t seeing a ton of patients.

“Even with tele-health visits, I’ve seen a 50 percent drop in visits during this and I have heard of other clinicians who are closer to 80 percent drops,” Johanning said.

The novel coronavirus has forced healthcare providers in Kansas — and across the country — to suddenly pivot to confront an insidious disease that threatens to overwhelm hospitals in a matter of weeks. But it’s also meant a sharp drop in the number of patients seeking routine and non-emergency care.

The result is health care providers in Kansas are coming under potentially existential financial pressure at a moment when the availability of care has never been more crucial. All kinds of providers — from hospitals to community health centers — are feeling the strain. Small, independently-owned physician practices are especially vulnerable.

18 COVID-19 cases linked to Coffey Co. nursing home

(WIBW) - Health officials say more than a dozen positive COVID-19 cases are linked to a nursing home in Coffey County.

The Life Care Center of Burlington is at the center of the outbreak.

The Coffey Co. Health Dept. says six new positive tests came in Monday, including a 39-year-old woman. The other cases are in people ages 77 to 90.

The first eight cases linked to the facility came in last week, with patients ranging in age from 20 to 90.

"We know that the containment of this infection is very difficult in care facilities," Coffey Co. Health Dept. Administrator Lindsay Payer said.

Lyon Co. Health officials confirm three more cases associated with the facility are in people from Lyon county.

In a statement Monday night to the Kansas City Star, the nursing home's director said they have at least 18 cases, involving 11 residents and seven workers. She said the workers are recovering at home.

It is not known in which county the person with the additional case resides.

Life Care Center is owned by the same company that owns a Wyandotte Co. facility where a resident died from COVID-19, and a Seattle facility that saw several deaths from coronavirus.
