Still using strict guidelines for testing in Kansas

Testing right now is under the direction of the Kansas Department of Health & Environment (KDHE),” said Ermel Heuer, director of infection prevention at CMH. “Starting this week, private labs will supposedly also be allowed to process testing, and our doctors may use that avenue in the future after we receive additional testing supplies.”

“We have sent two tests to the state for testing. One was tested for COVID-19 and is still pending results, the other was determined not to meet the criteria necessary for testing,” Heuer said.

Stormont Vail - Topeka implementing limited drive thru testing

Starting Tuesday, March 17, people who follow the directive to call their physician about their symptoms and meet the criteria for testing will be directed to the new location.

The move means Stormont's Corporate View Express Care location will close. Their staff is being utilized for the temporary location.

In addition, Stormont is postponing routine visits and elective procedures for patients 65 and older, or with a history of heart disease, lung disease or diabetes until at least May 15. Those with urgent needs will still be seen.

State says Johnson County has community spread of coronavirus, will get less testing

Only Johnson County residents who are hospitalized with COVID-19 symptoms will be tested, Norman said.

Anyone with mild symptoms in the county, Norman said, is asked to self isolate for at least seven days after symptoms start or 72 hours after their fever is gone.

The county will still be able to track the number of cases based on this testing and hospitalizations, Norman said, but the state will shift its testing supply for use in counties that have not reached community transmission.

“In a way that has a perverse benefit for the other areas where you still have to do that testing,” Norman said.

This strategy, Norman said, will prevent the state from running out of test kits.
