KANSAS CITY, Mo. ? The Kansas City Missouri School District says they are working to protect students and staff after a teacher was confirmed to have a case of the H1N1 virus, also known as the Swine Flu.
The district learned of the teacher?s diagnosis over the weekend. She is a teacher at Garcia Elementary and will remain away from work until she is cleared to return by a doctor, school officials said.
"The safety of our students and staff is paramount, and the District will work with local health authorities to take whatever steps are needed to avoid further spread of the disease," said district superintendent Dr. John Covington.
The district will notify families and staff of the situation and additional precautionary measures that should be taken. Those notifications will come via letter and phone, according to a news release from the district.
Anyone else who is suspected of having swine flu will be immediately isolated from other students and staff and directed to visit a doctor for further testing. Anybody with an additional confirmed case will also not be allowed to return to school until cleared by doctors.
"We will also make sure our community is protected by reinforcing proper health protocol, such as hand washing and the use of hand sanitizer,? Covington said. ?We believe these proactive steps will continue to serve us well."
More information about swine flu can be found on the Centers for Disease Control Web site.
