BERNHARDY Charles Alan Bernhardy, 39, of Kansas City, Kan., passed away October 26, 2009, at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Chuck fought hard for 21 days before passing from H1N1 virus.His family would like the public to be aware that even the healthy can be affected. Survivors include mother, Hazel Hook; brothers, Robert and Ronald Hook; step brother, Eddie Hook; sister, Alicia Hook; step sisters, Ronnette, Kathy and Laura; nephews, James and Zachary; niece, Alexandra.

Wyandotte County man dies after contracting swine flu

A 39-year-old Wyandotte County man died this week related to complications from the H1N1 flu, heath officials said today.

The patient with no underlying medical conditions started experiencing symptoms on Oct. 1 that included severe cough, chills and headache, the United Government Public Health Department reported.

To avoid spreading the illness, the department recommends staying home at least 24 hours after fever or signs of fever without use of fever reducing medications.

It also recommended getting flu shots.

Various health-care providers in Wyandotte County receive H1N1 vaccines each week for priority groups such as health-care workers, pregnant women and children 6 months to 4 years old or children from 5 to 18 with underlying medical conditions, they said.

Also included in the priority group are parents or caregivers of infants six months of age and younger.

As more H1N1 vaccine becomes available, they said, more people will have access to it.

In an interview with his invalid mother, she said "he began coughing one day, followed the next day with headache, diarrhea, nausea and fever. She said by day three, he was coughing blood." Died after a 21-day stay.
