Re: Kansas-- Week 9 (total 28)
Week 9:
Percent positive: 31% (rising) No influenza B detected
The statewide percentage of patients seeking care for ILI at these clinics was 2.6% compared to 2.1% for the previous week. This is the fifth consecutive week that the statewide ILI rate has been 2% or above (4.05% in Northeast Region)
265 patients admitted for pneumonia or influenza. Sixty-two (23%) of these admissions were among children less than 5 years of age. This is the seventh consecutive week in which greater than 20% of hospitalizations were among this age group.
Thirty-one (6%) of the 485 deaths reported to KDHE during the week ending February 27th were due to pneumonia or influenza. This is a decrease from the week ending February 20th when 10% of all deaths in Kansas were attributed to pneumonia or influenza. A majority of the deaths reported this week continued to occur in individuals aged 65 years and older; however, four deaths were in persons between the ages of 50-64 years.
The percentage of schools reporting 10% or greater absenteeism decreased slightly across all school levels statewide, from 8.7 to 6.2 for elementary schools, from 10.3 to 8.7 for middle schools, and 13.7 to 10.3 for high schools. Many counties did not submit their data by the reporting deadline.
