Doctors of the area claimed that as many as 50 persons of Kacchhi Basti, Govind Nagar visited their clinics with symptoms of chikangunya on Sunday. However, the health authorities dismissed the claims.

Clinic of a private doctor in Govind Nagar is flooded with patients having chikungunya-like symptoms since the past one week said. "Sunday morning turned out to be a panic day. I got more than 30 patients who showed symptoms of chikangunya. Patients suffering from high fever, severe pain in joints, swelling and rashes all over the body are coming," the doctor said.

Another medical practitioner agreed. He said, "From Saturday evening, patients had approached with fever and joint pain. However the number increased on Sunday morning when a majority of them complained of same symptoms."

Corporator of ward 73 Naveen Pandit said: "The locality has been lying in a deplorable state due to the negligent attitude of Kanpur Nagar Nigam (KNN). Heaps of garbage has collected in every nook and corner. People of all age groups are suffering from vector-borne diseases since the past few weeks."

However, the district health officials dismissed the claims made by the private doctors. They said laboratory test is must for detection of chikungunya. Symptoms of chikungunya are similar to those of dengue fever. It is a rare form of viral infection caused by an alphavirus that is spread by mosquitoes of genus aedes i.e. aedes aegypti, aedes albopicticus. Chikungunya virus is highly infective and disabling. Also, a person can have chikungunya and dengue fever together at the same time because the infected aedes mosquito can carry both the viruses.

Chief medical officer Ashok Mishra said: "Clinical appearance of both chikangunya and dengue are same. Without laboratory confirmation, the patients cannot be claimed positive. The local doctors have claimed the cases as chikungunya only on the basis of symptoms like headache, chills, rash, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, muscle pain and joint pain.

Health experts say, chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection is characterised with the onset of flu-like symptoms. Generally, symptoms persist for three days. In a few cases, the symptoms may continue for two weeks. The joints get swollen and painful. The platelet count in the body decreases.
