Mystery fever claims 8 lives in Vijaypur
TNN 27 December 2009, 10:38pm IST

Kanpur: Death of eight persons, including five of a family, in a span of 10 days due to some kind of mysterious disease in Vijaypur village in
Rasoolabad Block of Kanpur Dehat has caused panic among villagers.

The deadly disease has affected about a dozen families in the village that has a population of nearly 500 Dalit. The victims complained of high fever, severe headache and vomiting. The panicky villagers allege it is the same mysterious disease that had claimed nearly 500 lives in various blocks of Kanpur Dehat last year.

However, the district administration and health officials have denied the possibility and said postmortem of the youth who had died on Saturday would be conducted to ascertained the cause of death.

According to reports, Ramwati (22) daughter of Radheyshyam Dohrey was the first case reported from the village on December 15 followed by the death of a three-year-old Ravendra, son of Radheyshyam, after a brief illness. A couple of days after Radheshyam's wife Chidana (40) died on December 22, he also fell a prey to the killer disease. Again on December 26, Sanju (18) member of the same family died due to the mysterious disease followed by three more deaths viz Rajiv (3) son of Alok, Maulshree (35) wife of Amar Lal and one Guddu (22) of the same village.

Several other villagers are said to be ill. Villagers alleged that the district as well as health authorities were not doing anything to treat them or prevent further spread of the disease.

Villagers said they had met several health officials but had not received any assurance. They further complained that the community health centre (CHC) in the village was not functioning properly.

They further informed that health teams did visit their village but they did little except for taking blood samples of the affected persons. Even after 10 days to the outbreak, they were yet to receive the results of the tests.

District magistrate Saroj Tewari, however, said: "It would be too early to reach any conclusion. He said a committee comprising an SDM-rank official and a deputy chief medical officer had been constituted to corroborate the facts.

Doctors and paramedical staff had been camping in the village since Saturday and treatment of ailing persons was underway. He said blood samples had been taken and slides were made during the check up and most of the patients were found complaining of mild fever and body ache.

Re: Kanpur: Mystery fever claims 8 lives in Vijaypur

Assuming this is Uttar Pradesh, encephalitis is a likely possiblity (especially with severe headache and vomitting as symptoms), with any of the etiologies in the undefined encephalitis thread possible. I believe that is the disease referred to in the article when they talk about 500 deaths last year.

That area has also reported a lot of bacterial meningitis this year, which would also be consistent with the reported symptoms.

Much of the mild fever reported in other families might not be related to the fatal outbreak - the symptoms seem a bit different, and if there are eight fatalities total in a dozen families, five in one family is unusual.

A wide range of illnesses could cause this outbreak, but I am fairly confident H1N1 is not involved.

Edit: I just went through a bunch of the articles from 2008 in Kanpur Dehat - that wasn't encephalitis at all - it was "viral fever" that was probable malaria. But both malaria and encephalitis are widespread in Uttar Pradesh.

Lucknow: A mysterious disease, marked by high fever, severe headache and vomiting, has claimed lives of eight people in the last 15 days in the Kanpur Dehat (rural) district of Uttar Pradesh, a health official said Tuesday. "At least eight people have died of this mysterious disease in Vajayeepur village of Kanpur Dehat. We have not yet been able to identify the disease," Kanpur Dehat's additional Chief Medical Officer RK Singh told agency.

The first death of 22-year-old Ramawati Dohrey was reported in the village Dec 15. Since then, seven more people have died.

"Following the directives of the district magistrate, several teams of health officials have been directed to camp in the village and conduct necessary medical check-ups to identify the disease," he said.

The villagers, however, accused the health officials of not adopting any measures to control the disease that has affected dozens of families in Vajayeepur, about 150 km from state capital Lucknow.

"The ill-equipped community health centre (CHC) of our village has added to our worries. The centre fails to even provide basic health facilities to the patients as a result their condition deteriorates further," Chunni Lal, a former head of the village, told reporters.

Amar Lal, a villager who lost his 35-year-old wife to the mysterious fever, said the health officials had a lethargic approach. "We have now registered a written complaint with the district administration," Lal said.

He said many villagers have started migrating because of the disease.

"Even as the mysterious disease continues to spread in the village, the health staff is just not concerned about it. The residents of the village are now moving out just to ward off the disease," Lal said.

"The matter is a serious one. I have already constituted a committee to look into it," District Magistrate Saroj Tiwari told agency.

Please merge this thread with this one. It is the same outbreak. This newer article (the one above is published on the 29th, whereas the original one was from the 27th) does not mention the possiblity that five of the deaths might have been in the same family. The same symptomatic description, however, and at least no new deaths.

I guess the village is spelled both Vijaypur and Vajayeepur.

And as I commented on the other thread, a wide variety of illnesses might be responsible for this outbreak.
