Kaiser Eliminates About 1,200 Positions
About 2 Percent Of Workforce Cut

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Kaiser Permanente said Tuesday it eliminated about 2 percent of its workforce because of poor economic conditions.
The move means that about 1,200 represented positions were eliminated, according to the health care organization.
"This has been a difficult decision, and we are taking many steps to minimize the impact on our employees," Gay Westfall, Kaiser's senior vice president of human resources, said in a statement.
About one-third of these positions are temporary, on-call or short-hour employees, Westfall said.
Kaiser will offer incentives to some groups of employees who decide to leave voluntarily, the organization said.
"We need to take these steps today in order to prepare for the coming changes in the latter part of this year and in 2010," Westfall said in a statement.
