Given how widespread the gene's from Jersey Girl's virus is, does that lend credibility to the notion that the New York area was the source of much of the global spread? There was a lot of anecdote of people returning from the New York area having gotten sick.

Just looking at the 4 HA sequences from New Jersey, that New Jersey/01 has 3 different genes from the other. She hit the mutation jackpot.

But also comparing to the 169 sequences from New York, the Jersey/01 matches concensus in everyting except at 239 (my NCBI position) - she's the only one to have an "E" rather than the concensus "D". There are other minor variations in New York, but the Jersey girl is a conformist except for the one position. Why did that "E" make her such a winner?
