Jordan records first monkeypox case

By JT - Sep 08,2022 - Last updated at Sep 08,2022

AMMAN — Jordan has registered the first monkeypox case, the Health Ministry announced on Thursday.

The ministry said that the patient is a Jordanian citizen in his 30s, and has recently travelled to several European countries, returning to Jordan on August 20, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

The ministry added that the patient began developing symptoms on August 25, including a high temperature, sore throat, muscle soreness and swollen lymph nodes. The patient initially received treatment for a sore throat.

Five days later, the patient developed skin pustules on his hands, prompting his visit to a doctor, who suspected monkeypox. The doctor took a sample of the pustules as well as a blood sample. The samples were examined with a PCR test in the lab before the test results confirmed a positive case of monkeypox early on Thursday morning.

The Ministry of Health announces the registration of a monkeypox infection in a non-Jordanian person residing in Jordan

Monday: 2/9/2024

The Ministry of Health announced today, Monday, the emergence of laboratory results confirming the registration of a case of monkeypox infection for a non-Jordanian person residing in Jordan.

The ministry said in a press statement that the infected person is a 33-year-old male who showed symptoms of infection in the form of pimples (skin rash). He is currently in isolation at Al-Bashir Hospitals, and was diagnosed by a PCR test at the Ministry of Health laboratories. His health condition is stable.

The Ministry confirmed its continued monitoring of monkeypox and the announcement of any cases detected with complete transparency (God forbid), indicating its readiness and ability to deal with any development of the disease according to the national plan prepared in advance to deal with the disease in partnership with the relevant authorities.

It is worth noting that this is not the first case that Jordan has dealt with. A case was recorded on 9/8/2022, and routine procedures were followed in such cases, which were sufficient to prevent the spread of infection and the patient's recovery without any complications.

The Ministry recommended everyone to follow health guidelines, especially during travel, through its official channels.
