Jim Miekka, Creator of ?Hindenburg Omen,? Dies in Accident

Jim Miekka, creator of the ominous-sounding ?Hindenburg Omen??a technical indicator used to predict stock-market crashes?died earlier this week near his home in Surry, Maine. He was 54 years old.

Mr. Miekka, who was blind, was walking on the side of a road Tuesday morning with his guide dog, Zoey, when he was struck by an SUV. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to his father, Richard.

A mathematician and a former high-school physics teacher, Mr. Miekka never worked on Wall Street and didn?t hold any financial degrees. But four years ago, he developed a cult-like following among investors for his Hindenburg Omen. The technical indicator, named after the 1937 disaster of a German passenger airship, uses a confluence of metrics to predict steep market downturns...

I worked at a floor brokerage on the day of the 1987 crash. Wow, was that ever a spectacle! Seeing people's faces as hundreds of thousands of dollars (customers' and brokers') just vanished.

There are a lot of factors that come together in October to make it an anxiety-producing time. Ebola (or more accurately the fear of ebola) is just one of them, but also a smoke screen for losses that might be more troubling to investors. Much easier to blame bad numbers on that than more mundane economic causes.

That must have been something to witness, Bestla! At least there was no recession after that crash and I guess the market did bounce back. Still so many got caught in that panic.

I found this sad news on Miekka because I was wondering if that Omen had triggered again. Sure enough it has and must be what's bringing back memories of 1987:

The market is tracking the pattern from 1987 and appears to be in a precarious position.

They say trading is computerized now and that indicators like that are no longer valid, (anymore than jobs are). We'll see. I believe superstition and psychology run the market and the Hindenburg Omen triggered on Sept. 19th - the very same day a man infected with Ebola boarded a plane in Liberia and headed to Dallas, TX.

Now I'm spooked. :bat: ;)
