Death of crows and chicks trigger bird flu alarm

PTI | 05:12 PM,Dec 05,2011

Agartala, Dec 5 (PTI) The death of a few crows and chicks triggered alarm of an outbreak of avian flu at Teliamura in West Tripura district, but the authorities ruled out the possibility.

Two crows and seven chicks were found dead during the past 24 hours triggering panic of bird flu at Kalyanpur in entire Teliamura subdivision, officials said here today. "Initial inputs rule out possibility of avian flu outbreak," Director of Animal Resource Development department, Manoranjan Sarkar, said after a team of the District Investigation Laboratory headed by Shyamal Dasgupta, collected samples.

"The death of chicks, birds and ducks is common during winter, but we don't want to take any chance and would follow the guidelines laid down by the Ministry of Animal Husbandry," he said. "The team will conduct autopsy of the dead birds on the spot and get back to me," he said.

NGO seeks crow death probe
- Demand to include the scavengers in wildlife category
OUR CORRESPONDENT

Yugantar Bharti, a Jamshedpur-based NGO that deals with environmental issues, on Monday demanded a scientific study to find out the reason behind the spate of crow deaths in the state.

Speaking to the media, the NGO representatives also stressed on the need to study behavioural pattern of the flying scavengers like where they build their nests, their eating habits and issues like pollution and the depleting green cover.

?The premature deaths of crows is a matter of concern. The phenomenon, which started from Jamshedpur and later spread to other parts of the state, has assumed an epidemic proportion. Apart from the animal husbandry department, the wildlife authorities should also chip in and start a probe so that they can zero in on the accurate reason behind the deaths,? said Sarayu Roy, former MLA and senior member of Yugantar Bharti.

Crow deaths: Saryu Roy to call on CPCB chief

Monday, 05 December 2011 22:00

PNS | Jamshedpur

The social outfit Yugantar Bharati, which is also pursuing the crow?s death issue along with several other environmental problems confronting Kolhan, has decided to take up the matter with the Central Pollution Control Board and the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest.

Saryu Rai, senior functionary of the outfit and BJP leader, informed that he is scheduled to meet CPCB chairman on December 7 and subsequently have a dialogue also with the joint secretary of the Forest and Environment Ministry for demanding an effective and time-bound probe by wildlife experts into the crow deaths. It?s high time the Government here wakes up and takes the matter seriously as the phenomenon is spreading like wild fire.
?The neglectful approach of the forest department and clandestine conduct of the visiting probing teams (from Bhopal and Bareilly) have made us sceptical,? Rai said.
Holding the large scale felling of trees in violation to environment safety guidelines responsible for increasing pollution here, Rai asked the district forest office to set up enclosures of six feet circumference around trees and ensure adequate soil and water.
Meanwhile, the Ornithology Society of India has sought a comprehensive scientific probe by a competitive wildlife authority to arrive at accurate findings. The Society is not satisfied with the research of the National Institute of Virology Pune regarding the abnormal rise in the house crow mortality rate.
Calling for inclusion of crows in the category of wildlife, Prof. K K Sharma of OSI said: ?The situation is getting grave with every passing day. Unless crows are made part of the wildlife category there is a least possibility of competitive wildlife authority taking up the case.?
In this regard, he said that senior World Wildlife Fund official RK Singh is visiting here on December 18 to make a spot study of the Steel City?s environmental issues.
?We need to study their behavioural pattern and roosting habitat along with the immediate causes (of crow deaths) and we are of the opinion only a qualified wildlife body can do it satisfactorily,? Prof. Sharma said.
An abrupt rise in the death of crows was first reported in a study by Sharma, the Head of Department of Zoology of Co-operative College, in September.
Sharma conducted the study after he found large number of carcasses at a spot in Jubilee Park. In his initial study, Sharma suspected encephalitis virus as the major cause and said he had detected some unnatural behaviour among the crows apparently affected by the virus. He claimed that 10 per cent of the population of crows in a particular region of the city has already died due to the virus within a fortnight since he began the study.

?It is a matter of great concern. As per my study, the symptoms found in the crows prior to their untimely death have given me reasons to believe encephalitis is apparently the cause behind the rise in the death toll,? said Sharma.

Sharma further added that thick presence of water hyacinths in the two adjoining rivers of Kharkhai and Subernarekha is primarily responsible for the spread of viral infections in the city which took its toll on the crows,. Poor climatic condition, high presence of bacteria in the water bodies and presence of germs in kitchen waste made things worse for the crow?s survival, he said.:tiphat:http://www.dailypioneer.com/state-e...w-deaths-saryu-roy-to-call-on-cpcb-chief.html

Antibiotics are not effective against a virus. I hope the mention of DDT spraying inside animal enclosures at the zoo is a typo or mis-quote in the article.

The recommendation to wear masks and gloves is a very good idea.

The best thing for people to do when they see a dead bird is to call local health authorities who can properly dispose of the bird.

Here are the FAO recommendations for handling animals who may be infected with bird flu, H5N1:

WHAT TO DO WITH SICK OR DEAD BIRDS

□ Report sick or dead birds immediately to the veterinary authorities (or local equivalent)
□ Do not leave dead animals lying around
□ Do not throw dead animals into rivers, lakes or other bodies of water
□ If you have a plastic bag, place the carcass in the bag; if you do not, take the carcass away from the rest of the flock and out of reach of children and others
□ Leave disposal of bird carcasses to the veterinary authorities (or local equivalent) and help only if they ask
□ If there are no veterinary authorities (or local equivalent), seek help from your local community to dispose of carcasses
□ Do not eat the carcass of a dead bird
□ Do not sell the carcass of a dead bird

IF YOU MUST DISPOSE OF DEAD BIRDS YOURSELF

□ Get rid of carcasses safely by burning them or burying them deeply enough that dogs, cats and other scavengers cannot reach them
□ Burn or bury feathers and other waste away from your farmyard

http://www.fao.org/docs/eims/upload//207623/FAO_HPAI_messages.pdf

Ideas from FluTrackers:

WEAR PROTECTIVE COVERINGS ON YOUR NOSE, MOUTH, EYES, and HANDS if you chose to dispose of dead birds. Something called an "N95" mask is good to use if you can get one. Wear protective glasses over your eyes. Find some gloves for your hands.

Be sure to gather all the feathers from the dead birds too. H5N1 has been found in the quills of feathers.

After you are finished with the disposal of the dead birds, throw the protective coverings into a plastic bag and seal it. If you gathered many dead birds you probably stepped in some of their feces. Your shoes will have to be thrown away too.

Wash your face, hands, arms, neck with a good soap. Also, gargle with some antiseptic mouth wash if you have it.

Bird Flu killing crows in Jharkhand
December 15, 2011 IANS Ranchi

In a worrying development, hundreds of crows have died in Jharkhand due to bird flu, a government official said Thursday.

The crows first started dying mysteriously last month in Jamshedpur district. This was followed by their deaths in Ranchi, Bokaro, Khuti, Sahebganj and other districts of the state.

Concerned over the situation, the Jharkhand's animal husbandry department called in experts from Bhopal's Indian Veterinary Research Institute to ascertain the cause of the crows' large-scale deaths.

"Samples of the dead crows were sent to Bhopal for tests. The scientists found strains of the deadly H5N1 virus in the dead crows, thus confirming that they had died of bird flu," an official of the animal husbandary department told IANS.
