Whooping cough cases see big rise
The Yomiuri Shimbun
The number of people suffering from whooping cough is increasing at the fastest pace in 10 years, according to a survey by the National Institute of Infectious Diseases.
The survey was conducted on selected pediatric departments at 3,000 locations across the nation.
As of March 8, 775 reported cases of whooping cough had been reported this year--a leap of about 30 percent compared with the 582 cases registered in the same period last year, when there was a large outbreak of the disease.
According to experts, the disease could spread even further in early summer.
In 2005, a total of 1,358 people contracted the disease, rising to 2,926 in 2007 and 6,749 in 2008.
During the past 10 years, the large number of adults catching whooping cough has been particularly noticeable. Ten years ago, people aged 20 or older accounted for only a few percent of whooping cough cases. However, this figure had risen to 36.7 percent by last year.
